I Think I'm Going To Cry

I took my 2002 F-250 Superduty in right before Christmas to get what appeared to be a rear end main seal leak fixed. Right before heading to Mexico, I noticed the darn thing was still leaking. I finally was able to take the truck back in on Tuesday to get it fixed. They dropped the tranny again and told me the seal was an aftermarket and was defective, so they replaced it with Ford original, which is all I want on this truck anyway. I've told them that before.

Yesterday, they were checking it and it was still leaking. Well, today they discovered the real problem, the oil pump is bad. Sticker shock, they cost $1,500! They said it apparently is a known problem on these trucks because the Ford dealership has them in stock. I need a drink.......

It's the last of the 7.3L diesels. Everything is expensive on the truck, but I knew that when I bought it.

I guess I do not see the connection with a oil leak and a bad oil pump.

Me too, If there is good oil pressure, and just a leak, I would be looking at the rear main/oil pan/gasket to see where it's coming from before I would throw down 1500,

I had a 6.9 that would leak oil, The oil pan had a pinhole at the bottom-easy fix.

If your super duty is 4wd I will tell you taking the pan off is a HUGE job, The easiest way is to drop the crossmember. Youcan lift the engine as high as it possibly will go and still be 3/4s of an inch too short to weasel the pan out..

The oil is leaking out of the pump. They thought it might have been the pan, but finally tracked it up to the pump. They also said that this apparently is a known problem because the dealership is keeping these pumps on the shelf two years past the required 10 year stocking.

Yeah, it is, the expensive one. This beats the cost of when the gasket blew out on the turbo on the way to the 45th anniversary show in Birmingham. That was only $1300. Sigh........

That seems like it would cause poor running since the injectors work on the oil pressure. Plus....it is high pressure.....500 psi if my old man memory is working. I would think it would of make a huge mess under the hood.

I think I would ask more questions as to exactly what and where it is leaking at. There are three O rings that can be replaced.

I am learning the 7.3 since I acquired a '00 4x4 SC a couple months ago. I don' t hear a lot about that oil pump getting replaced.... I find the Ford Truck Enthusiasts site is pretty good to learn on.

Well, I have thought that the sound of the engine has been "off" for the last month or so, but no loss of performance. The oil leaked down the rear of the engine, and, believe me, it's a mess. Plus, you should see my driveway.

Have you looked at Rock Auto yet? Just a quick search turned up 3 diff pumps from $500-$700.

Laurie,

Did you ask on the Dieselstop.com? I've done a lot of reading on the HPOP and it seems that its not uncommon for them to leak at the reservoir. They offer rebuild kits that are very reasonable and show how to rebuild them yourself.

Laurie,

I take it this is something you wouldn't want to tackle yourself...

That Pump is easier to get at The "HPOP" Its actually right up in front of the engine.

I have a 99 7.3 motor sitting in the garage, if you plan on tackling it yourself I could take as many pictures as you want..

Not a chance that I would tackle this myself. I do my own oil changes on the truck, but that's it. They still have it, making sure that there is no more leaking so I haven't had a discussion with them yet. I will say that I trust this shop and have been going there for almost 20 years. I also allow them to work on my Mustangs, so that says something about them.

Just got my truck back (I missed it!). Turns out the whole thing was $1,500. The part was $900, but there was a core charge that offset it. Still way bad, but at least there's not another $800 of labor on top of $1,500. The rear main was bad, so it was a dual leak. This is a good, honest, shop that I've been going to since 1994. The owner came out and talked with me, because I asked if there really had been a rear main seal leak. He said there was, and if there hadn't been, he would have refunded that cost. He has done similar things in the past for me and other customers when something was misdiagnosed.

The good part: I can add another 1,000 miles before I need to change the oil again. LOL
