I want to upgrade my wireless system at home

I have an old Linksys 2.7ghz or whatever wireless system and assume that if I scrap it out for a bigger number router, I will have a stronger coverage throughout the house? I do most of my surfing of naughtynuns.com from the kitchen which is the furthest away from the router and I've always had a weak signal.

Any brand name suggestions? Have always been happy with Linksys. We're running 4 laptops.

We are using a Linksys router at home, with no problems. I can be out in the shop and I get a great signal, if I need to jump on the net.

Are you sure that it's a weak signal? naughtynuns.com is a very popular and busy website, and it could just be slow on their end.....or so I've heard.... :craz

Craig, don't fall for the marketing hype. A bigger number is WORSE, despite what the salesgeeks will tell you. The higher the number, the more the signal acts like light...more easily stopped by things like walls and floors. Not exactly what you want in a house. :rofl

You'd be better off buying a router with a removable antenna (if you don't have one already) and slapping on the biggest omindirectional antenna L-com has. Nice thing about the older linksys is that they tend to have antennas that unscrew..and they are built better than the new production stuff :D

This is a convenient little model that will plug into most older linksys models and is cheaper/better than the glossy blisster pack junk at Raples, err....Staples.

Here's is an even more powerful one: (biggest one they have)

Here's what I'd buy at first guess: (cheaper too)

Some are cheaper than others, depending on what you want/are willing to spend, the last unit should do well enough.

How far away (how many walls, ect) are there from the unit to your kitchen? Can you see it from the kitchen? That might help you choose the best antenna for your needs.

Heck, you might be able to help things out by getting the unit as high as you can. The 3 rules of getting good signal is antenna height, antenna height, and antenna height. :D

This is some good shiat! When I get home, I'll look at my router. I have probably 3 walls blocking the office from the kitchen. The router is on the desk so if I can raise the anttena or better yet attach a better antenna to my existing router, I'd be pretty happy. I'll report back when I get home.

Which linksys is it? I have the WRT54G. I upgraded it to a hacked Firmware, and it has an option to turn up the signal strength. I turned mine way up and got much better signal. Might be shortening the life of the router...but, you know...whatever.

I've got a Linksys WRT310N and it has great signal. In fact, I can drive down the street about 100yrds or so and still have signal. Best part...it was free. A friend gave it to me after she said it was broke. Within 10 minutes of her leaving, I had a working new router.

Upgrading your wireless system at home

If those other options do not work there is another way without getting another router. Get a repeater. Sorry no fancy links, just a suggestion on some hardware to look for. It does what the name implies, it does not amplify the signal, it just repeats it. We use them in wireless security applications, same animal different beast. fd

Well since I set it up the first time let me know if you need more help!! A new lynksys wouldn't be a bad idea in my book! You could always try it and return it if it doesn't improve anything.

I got a new router last year and I am very happy with it!
