Idiot's guide to selling stuff long-distance?

I flat out suck at selling big, heavy things thru classified ads. A good friend of mine is the only person I know that a) has a truck and b) doesn't live in BFE. As a consequence, he gets roped into some of these deals. Last time we tried that idea, dude never showed up, buddy "sold" the engine to his co-worker, we never saw any $$ and after a 200 mile roundtrip, it's back in my driveway in a trash bag.

Any tips on how to avoid such a clusterfawk in the future? Looking back, I should have gotten my money up front, but I'm an idiot. :lol

Got a guy in another part of the state that's interested in my EFI motor but I'm I dunno how to best do a deal like this?

It's is called "they pick it up". Solves all the problems. Have them call when they leave their place and again as they enter your area. No show, no sale, no loss to you but some time that you were doing things anyway.

Yep.

Axe the delivery service. You'll get shafted more often than not.

So I guess bringing it to New Mexico is out of the qustion :sur

Oh and I need you to instll it also :lol

I agree, want it? come and get it... the only other thing you could have done is get some delivery $$$ before the thing even goes on the truck. Then if they no-show at least you aren't out the cost of gas... never mind the favors you're using up with your truck buddy...

I wouldn't bother though, not unless it was a good friend...

Never heard of delivering the product, I always have gone myself to pick it up.

Thanks guys. Pretty much what I suspected I ought to have done in the first place. :lol

I must attract a special brand of crackhead then, I get asked all the time, whether or not I offer to meet them. heck, one guy wanted me to ship a 5.0L shortblock to Miami, "because he had connections at UPS".

Crackhead, I only wanted $50 for it, how much you think it's gonna cost to ship 170lbs of pig iron? :lol

I get asked too......I just don't agree to deliver. :lol Got a deal right now the guy asked me to deliver.....I said no, he said he will call back. No big deal cuz I am not desperate to sell it.

I'm pretty tired of tire kickers too, or guys who say they'll come by Saturday afternoon and don't show up. I waste an afternoon waiting around for them when I have errands to run.

I probably won't sell anything doing this, but I'm about to start charging a sitting fee, ie, you send me 20 bucks to get me to sit and wait for you. Otherwise I may or may not be home when you get here and you can wait for me if I'm out.

Give them your cell # and tell them to call when they are about 15 minutes away. If they are local from Craigs list, etc they are coming to me. If they want it bad enough they'll show up.

On the rare times I ship something, get paid first then ship. Only do that if it's someone I trust from this board or I sell something from time to time on ebay, etc.

If you put a Craigs list ad out and they want it shipped tell them to FO. There likely a scam artist.
