If you had to move, where would you go?

I've flat run out of things to contemplate when I'm looking for something to kick around, so I started thinking ahead. Summer of 2010, I'll be a fresh college grajuate with a BS in Information Tech. with an Info Systems Management specialization and probably a business minor. There is damn little hope of finding a job outside of flipping burgers in my hometown, and I'm ***ing sick of snow. :rofl

So...I've been kicking around the idea of central NC. Little snow, not too hot, big on tech-jobs...what's not to like? Been through there once or twice and it seems nice.

I also have the option of the tampa area as I've spent quite a bit of time down there and we have a cabin down there. Does get kinda hot, but I like the sub-tropical feel.

I also sorta-kinda kicked around Texas, seems like they are doing interesting things down there and there's not much in the way of snow.

That's just what I thought of, I'd really like to hear ideas. I'm not much of a big city person, so 45 mins driving to a country setting would be ideal, and HOAs and suburbs are on my "hate list". I like taking a leak in the middle of my driveway and not being bothered. :rofl

What chu think?

Well, count Ms out. Tech jobs are scarce, it's too damn hot and muggy for 9 months of the year, wet the rest, bugs that carry off children in the night.

The triangle in NC is a good choice. Have you tried joining LinkedIn? It's a professional networking site (www.linkedin.com). One of the nice features is has is that you can search and get listings by areas which have the most IT jobs in them, then you can build a network with other people in that area. It's also great for searching job leads and getting information from personal contacts on different companies and locations.

I'd love to get out of Houston and move to the Austin area as far as Texas goes. Houston sucks. It is still hummid as a MF here and this summer was seriously hot by June.

Have you considered the northwest...Seatle (sp?) area maybe. I hear the winters up there suck because it rains for days on end. But I used to spend a lot of time up there in the summer and there is no finer place on earth to be then that area during July / August.

Yep, up in The Woodlands area.

Herb was dropping off my new motor yesterday and I was only outside for about 30 - 45 minutes and it was so dang humid I thought about taking a shower before going back to work. It was the same thing at the dojo last Saturday...it wasn't so much hot just humid. This front moving through is supposed to cool things off some...I sure hope so.

So you're saying that MS does have at least one good point??

Central NC (Greensboro, Winston Salem) will not have as many opportunities as the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). Those two areas are about an hour and a half from each other. Both great places but if you live "in" the Triangle, it can get very expensive. 30 minutes away and you are rural. I'm an NC'er from birth and have no desire to go anywhere else. I will tell you this, the summers here (esp R,D, CH) can get brutal with the humidity. Sanborn is about two hours east of Raleigh so he may chime in also. Let me know if you want anymore info. If you decide to visit the area let me know. Raleigh was my old college stomping grounds and I look for any excuse to get down there.

Don't do Kansas. Mainly because we don't want you hear. :bird

Yeah, and being a college graduate and all, you probably want to go somewhere where the locals know how to spell.

OK, that there is funny as hell :rofl

But true :nice

Don't even consider California....

SoCal can be hot and nasty...mostly desert.
Central California is always sunny and has moderate temps all year.
Eastern California along the Sierras is just terrrible with the rolling hills and up into the granite and forests. And Lake Tahoe...just hell.
NorCal is more mountains and full of small towns with weather that may change twice a year.

Its hell I tell ya .........

Having been everywhere, I chose here.

Mild/short winters and LONG summers. Spring usually starts in mid March and Fall ends right around/after Christmas.

The cost of living is cheap when compared to most other places.

The one thing I have to caution you on..... don't over-estimate the value of your degree. While it will open doors quicker for you, it's not a guanantee of a job of your choosing.

Jeez dave, that doesn't encourage me to look elsewhere. :rofl

But...yeah, unlike some people I went to school with, I've got the presence of mind to GET A JOB before I do anything drastic. Girl I went to highschool with graduated this June with a communications degree and she's working at Krogers, trying to pay for her $15,000 wedding that she did with no regard to price because she had planned on having a "real job" by the time she had to start paying on it all. I imagine that paying for that on a grocery store salary is a real bitch.

Thanks guys for the info/ideas. Unfortunately, the People's Republik of California is out of the running unless something big happens...

a communications degree and she's working at Krogers

We have girls working here at the office in "the pit"..... where menial administrative tasks are performed..... making well under $30k with a masters degree. The sad thing is that their degree is worthless as the girl sitting next to them may only have a GED.

If making good money is your #1 goal, live where the work will pay for your particular skillset. If you limit the choices to only where you'd like to live, you'll likely be comprimising your salary.

2 reasons not to consider Florida. 1. Summer's are Hot,Humid and Long. 2. Unemployment is over 13%.
However ,Fall thru Spring is nice,(we don't really have Winter).

Part of the problem for some people is they get a degree in something useless. I know my older sister did that, even got a masters degree and she is still living at home spending our inheritance.

But part of it is "marketing". I got out of school when the economy was bad. The only thing going down at the University placement office at that time was for an auto parts store manager, nothing wrong with doing that for a job but frankly I could have done that without a degree.

I made my own opportunities. If I was in a suit and going to town anyway I always took the yellow pages and lots of extra resume copies. When in a building for an interview I'd find any firms in that building on the building directory. Then I'd walk in and ask the receptionist to please give my resume to the managing partner as I handed it to her. You'd be surprised...I got several calls for interviews that way. I'd also check the yellow pages and if there was another building near where I was going, I'd take a side trip to visit places.

I can't speak for other fields but in accounting / CPA firms these days you pretty much either have to do an internship or have experience to get hired. Most firms now days have started going the route of you do an internship with them then if you prove you have potential they offer you a job when you get out. Our pastor's son screwed around and didn't do any internships and is now having a really tough time finding something. I know that in the case of CPA firms these days they want to test drive before they buy....

Sweet. Looks like I've got a sidekick. Although, Mark can HEAR pretty well from what I understand. Kansas...geez. I mean, what do you have in Kansa besides highway....................farm.....................highway..................farm, ooh twister...........highway? Your claim to fame is a freakin' yappy dog that some heel clicker just had to find. The one plus for Kansas is the obvious cure for insomnia. Drive through it, you'll see.

Now California has some very beautiful scenery. Too bad the people screw it up!

Keep dissing on Kansas, means nothing to me. It just leaves more room for the rest of us without you "Coasters" mucking it up :nice
