Installed a new cat-back on the 86 last weekend to replace the DroneMaster 2-chambers and ill-fitting tailpipes that were on the car. I know that Flowmasters were the classic 80's 5.0 sound, but seriously, :wtf were we thinking??? :char I like to hear the exhaust outside the car, not feel it inside the car!
Did something different this time. Wanted a quieter muffler (gotta grow up sometime), so I tried the Dynomax VT's. They are basically the Dynomax welded Ulra-Flos with a spring-loaded valve inside. The flap is closed at low flow, making them almost stock-quiet. At higher flows, the flap opens and they are more like a straight-thru muffler...
I also installed new stainless tailpipes like the car originally had, just in 2.5" instead of 2.25".
Loving this setup. Much, much, much quieter inside the car. I think you hear more "engine noise" than exhaust noise at idle. Inside the car is quiet, as well as in front of, and beside the car - go behind the car, and you hear a nice mellow exhaust. Sounds good without being annoying or rattling windows. While driving, it sounds about one notch above the way I remember a stock 5.0 exhaust - pretty nice, but you can still carry a conversation inside the car. However, when you get on it, the valves open up, and it has a REALLY nice deep note - sounds GREAT from ~4000rpm up. On the highway at 75mph, 2100rpm I can actually hear the stereo without turning it up... Instead of feeling my teeth rattle. Downshift to 4th, open it up, and it sounds a LOT like the Magnaflows I had on the 91. :steer
I give this :thu
