inch/lb torque?

Hi everyone. I need to replace my pinion seal on the 3.50 8" in the '66. I think I read the procedure a couple of years ago to use the inch/lb torque wrench to see how much it takes to turn the pinion? Then after seal replacement to return the setting to that point? Please correct me or point in the correct direction? Thanks, Gary

I forgot to add that I have done this on Cheby's before, but just marked where the nut/pinion were mated and put it back there (no torque wrench). :nut

On Ford diff's there is a crush sleeve. The initial set-up, you torque the nut until it requires about 15 in/lbs to rotate the pinion. This is with no ring gear. You use one of those bar type torque wrenches.
If you are just replacing the seal you can probably get away with doing like you have done on Cheby's, just don't over tighten or you will crush the sleeve some more and have noise!
