IT runs!

OMG! With only the long tube hedders, my motor sounded like a fuel dragster when Herb(the motor builder) blipped the throttle! It was about 6:00 pm and pitch black and stone quiet in my subdivision, I'm sure a few fellow neighbors fell off of their sofa's when it started! Unfortunately Herb doesn't know much about the electrical portion regarding the alternator/Vr and the correct wires that feed the distributor in the first place~ that's not his department, but he did what he promised, got it running for me! He's so cool! I still haven't found my shop manual! I guess it's with all the lost socks!
Exhaust? I'd really like to be able to run my stang~ should I just get some temporary cheap mufflers to put on it? When I put mufflers, I can move the stang in and out of the garage, and finish other things! how cool! or just have it hauled down to the local muffler shop?
Just sharing my excitement!

pardon this photo, this was taken a few months ago, driveshaft has been connected since. I just love the way the hedders look!

Where's the video? Congrats on the milestone. What type of exhaust are you wanting? You could have the car trailered to a local muffler shop and have a system made up or buy an exhaust kit. You'll probably pay less to have a shop make one up, but not many shops will make mandrel bent pipes. Just personal preference I suppose. You could always pick up a couple mufflers, couple clamps and collector brackets and bolt the mufflers to the long tubes and drive it to a shop.

Very cool Dne, I know thats a great feeling. I think if your ready for mufflers, you should just commit to the ones / setup you think you will like. Its all down hill from here. Enjoy!

I LOVE the sound of open headers! Congrates! I've driven open headers to the muffler shop before, you will get a lot of looks!

Thanks ya'll! it's actually not quite ready to drive to a shop~ the front fenders are only held by 2 bolts each. As for exhaust, I'd like a fairly quieter exhaust with a nice sound~ oh, I'll look in the exhaust section and post some exhaust questions there. I'd just like to top off the tranny fluid, connect the flaming river PS pump and see if my rack works, put my ac belt on(ac system is not connected yet), you know what I'm talking about. and plus I'm anxious to see how my disc brake conversion worked out, even if only in the driveway! but to hear it actually run! sigh~ sigh of relief!

Awesome. I ran mine for a week or so with open headers. I love that sound. (That's why I have cutouts welded in) Congrats and screw hauling it to the muffler shop. Drive that baby down there and make some noise! Let everyone know you're on the road.

Great to hear it's running!

Herb is a good guy. So far I've been happy with the 302 he put together for me.

If it were me, I'd probably just go ahead and get whatever exhaust set up you want.

Of course, I am still running stock exhaust because I have other priorities, LOL!

Congrats Dne', nothing better than the engine finally running!

You could add a couple cheap mufflers with turn downs and then not worry about the full exhaust till you're ready.

this sounds like a plan! I may just go over the shop that's going to do my exhaust, buy the mufflers I'm going to use from him. I feel obligated to him cause he's done a couple freebie things for me! anyway,
thanks!!

Dne',

If it were me, I wouldn't waste any time/money on any kind of temporary exhaust system.

Figure out the sound you're looking for... I assume it to be a subtle rumble.... and then either trailer or if you don't mind being stared at for a few miles, drive the car to an exhaust shop to have the exhaust professionally installed. You'll likely not get mandrel bent pipes, but in your case the difference between mandrel bends or not is negligible. You're not building an all out "race car" that would benefit from mandrel bends.

Congrats, looks clean, what headers did you use?
I like the 'calcustom' finned pan, almost went with that since I have the old valve covers.

I plan to do as you stated and just get the mufflers I want and temp mount them with some cheap straight pipe. I may just use the stock mufflers and pieces from my old system to mount a temp system to the headers.

Get a video of the open headers if you get a chance you may want to listen to it later and compare to your finished 'quiet' system. Wish I would have videoed my stock 2" system for comparison when I'm done.

I have difficulty keeping up with my own posts!
Jonk, I had to use Flaming river hedders(long tube). I tried the shorty hedders, but the drivers side made contact with the shorty flange! Pull them back out, ordered the correct hedders to go with the Flaming river rack n pinion! They look great. I stopped by my local muffler shop~ I convinced myself that I'm going to have a wrecker come over and haul my stang to their shop 2 miles from my home! I may as well get it done now! I have some other issues right now before getting it over there. I figure what's another 100bucks in wrecker fees at this point!

But.....

Once the exhaust is installed will you be able to drive the car home? If so, I guarantee that you won't be thinking about that $100 you spent to get it there!
