Job Relocation, job opportunity, etc. etc.

The company I work for spun off from a huge company a few years ago. We are still pretty big but the point is changes are slowly coming. When we were spun off we opened a corporate office in Buckhead (Atlanta area) and relocated most of the original North American office from Cleveland. The tlanta based office is now our Global office and they have added a few more floors of people. Not long ago it was announced that they would build a Global Technology Center North of Atlanta in Kennesaw GA. They would then relocate our huge R&D center from Kingston Canada to this location. A few days ago they announced that the Tech Center that I was a BIG part of building and worked at for 12 years or so will relocate as well. Tonight (it's night in Saudi) my boss called me, and I should say it's not the first time I've been approached about the job part, to ask my feelings on the announcement.
You see, I have a unique talent or experience in my company. I'm not a rocket scientist but have rare and hard to duplicate experience. My company has been trying to use those skills in many ways over the years including the job I have now which was created just for me. Anyway, now that some people will retire and the tech center will move, the pressure is on to put someone like myself in a position at this new tech center. Right now I work from home and of course travel most every week. I am spoiled a bit though because I am control of my schedule for the most part and really don't answer to anyone or have any answering to me. The new job would be a lot more responsibility and less travel but probably long days in the lab and a lot of headaches. That being said I would guess I would get a nice compensation. My boss has indicated I will be getting some phones calls and will have to make a decision because they will need to start looking elsewhere if I don't want it. The thing is, my wife and two of my sons are very happy with there life. I know they all have friends and school/work, etc, and the move would mean they have to start over. A while back there was talk of sending me to Brazil for two years but my boss put the brakes on that and I think it's because he knew this was coming.
Lot's to think about....

Sister lived in Kennesaw, pretty nice place. Making these decisions isn't easy, but it not like you'd be moving to LA NYC hell.

Deb and I have always made moves on what's best for US, not me or her, but both of us. We weigh the pro's and con's of everything from location, expenses, compensation and available entertainment opportunities. This M.O. has taken us from Florida to Kansas to Oregon and back to Kansas with a few extra moves within Kansas and Florida.

We have yet to make a bad move (knocks on head). We've taken months to make a decision and a weekend to make the biggest one (Florida to Kansas). The short time frame on the latter just made us go through all the prerequisites non stop, and that was back before the internet-web thingy! We actually went to a LIBRARY on a Saturday and did all the research.

Oh yeah, good luck!

All I will add is that most of these types of opportunities have broader reaching implications. I would really recommend considering the long range affect of accepting or passing on the offer. Declining may put you in a negative light or, as I found out, limit future career opportunities within the company. Sometimes the bus only stops once to pick up a rider you might say.

As someone, who like yourself has spent most of the working career somewhere other than home, I can fully appreciate the interest in limiting your time on the road. That is certainly a big piece in the puzzle.

Good luck which ever way you decide to go!

I have moved/changed jobs several times in my 21 years with the company. I think we have done the same thing and looked at the move/changes effects on the whole family. I haven't had time to discuss this detail with my wife while I'm in Saudi but the job part has been out there for a while. The current location is in Chicago and we really don't/didn't want to move back there. Cost of living is just too much and would mean a lower standard of living. I have been to our Atlanta office and not interested in living in or around Buckhead. Too expensive and traffic sucks. I think the message my boss was sending is exactly that this opportunity won't come around again. I have been putting (discussion of) offers off and now they are getting serious.
I will have to look at Kennesaw, it could be a good move. A lot still has to happen, like what role they want me to do, what kind of pay and relocation deal they offer, timeframe, etc. etc. but I am open and I think the wife and kids would like to see me home more. I might actually get time at night to work on stuff instead of sitting in hotel rooms!

Nothing is more important than a happy family! and you only get one go round, make it worthwhile...at least that's how I look at life.

All I can say is : You can't live your life twice.
Making a decision based on this saying , you can't make a wrong decision.
IMHO.

A lot to consider Craig but adjusting from Ky to Ga. is a lot easier than the folks that went from Cleveland to Ga., I've worked with people from both areas and know that had to be quite an adjustment for the CLE folks. Your kids are in their HS years so the move won't affect them for long before they are starting college, careers and adult life (waiting to start mine).

I would wonder how much longer you would be 'left alone' as far as scheduling and being allowed not to be based out of the home office eventually anyway. Whomever takes this position or another may have their finger on that button. Maybe you can make the position a mix of travel and onsite weeks? Your skillz will obviously still be needed at remote locations from time to time.

Good luck,
Jon

Just do it......lol

Always hard decisions. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...just that you never are on the other side. We always talked things over long and hard.....our move from Az. to Fl. was a three year decision making process and it did not include any jobs...just the fact of saying to heck with working and living life as we want to. I would say that this looks like a potential for advancement with a company you like working for. Also sounds like the benefits of you being home more might outweigh the fact of the kids having to move. We always said the kids thoughts and desires are important...but we as parents make the final decision. Good luck in what you choose.

Craig,

There is a financial angle that I haven't seen pointed out yet. Some parts of the country have been rocked in terms of housing values the last few years while others (Texas comes to mind) really didn't get hurt much at all. Selling a house in some parts is next to impossible as well. If you are offered a good re-lo package, what used to be the normal deal could really be worth 10's if not $100's of thousands of dollars.
Houses in my area have seen values drop hundreds of thousands of dollars (25-35%). I would bet parts of Georgia are similar. Buying a house today is like stealing the deals are so good. If your company will help you get out of yours and share some of the possible financial pain, this move might be the best long $$$ term move you ever make.

Something to consider.

I am hoping it will be a good offer. I know the job will include some travel. Probably still the overseas stuff. I know the relocation deal could be huge if they help me get out of my house. Values have dropped a little but the area I live in is not a hot spot so houses don't move quick.
As for the area I will have questions if this deal materializes. It will be great to get an insiders view of the area.

don't worry Bill, it won't happen soon. And my dad lives out by you so we will still visit the area a lot

I love a couple miles away from Kennesaw, in East Cobb Marietta. GREAT time to buy a house here...wish I'd waited.

Best of luck with your choice. Any help I can offer, please call on me. Even if it's help with the move.

Steve

Thanks Steve, I will be asking advise on where to look for a house I'm sure and it will be great to have people in the area we can already know!
