.....has a relative/friend with only one functioning hand. The reason I bring this up is so many people do not know this item
http://www.dexter-russell.com/Item_details_1.asp?id=422&group_name=T.asp is out there. The reason I know of them is my grandfather (passed now) shot his right hand off in a hunting accident when he was 17.....many years ago (most likely around 1915). I remember him always having this knife fork combo and was amazed at how well it worked.
The outer curved edge is a knife and one would rock it back and forth to cut the food. My grandfather never missed out on any food....nor did he have to have someone handle it for him. They also work great for someone in an arm cast for an extended time.
My folks always carried one with them in the car and would give them away to anyone they came across that had only one functioning hand. Since my parents have passed on, my wife and I have been doing this since 2004. We have given out nearly 25 knives since then. We do this in person so we can talk with the person and explain the reason and function of the unit. We just got 10 in and have only given out one locally since being in Panama City.
The best one we did was a few years ago in Tucson. We were in a sports bar and a young fellow came in missing his left arm. He struggled at the bar to manage his meal. I went and talked with him and he insisted he could not afford one but failed to hear me say it was his...no charge. After that sunk in, he said thank you, got a tearful eye and handed me his drivers lic. to prove that that day was his birthday. He had no one around to recognize that and said we made that birthday the best he has had in years. After about 5 min. of practice, he was whipping thru his food and much more relaxed.
Just letting you all know of a useful item for those in need.
