I figured "hey I towed his ass home from Iowa so I should be able to get away with poking a little fun every now and again.

Near as I can tell....the dizzy gear looks 'ok' (although the wear pattern looks a little odd) and the cam gear looks ok....so I suppose I've got a busted timing chain.

Which means I'm not going to have this car running by Saturday morning :(

Are you sure you have a bad timing chain? A bronze distributor gear will not last long... Since you have the distributor out have someone spin it over while you look down the hole to see if the CAM moves or pull the fuel pump to check the chain. With the evidence presented I would say brass gear is the issue not the chain.

I had not thought to check this (I was too emotional) .

Anyway, yes, if I crank the motor the cam spins....so I suppose that means either my dizzy or cam gear is fubar...based on pic....I think I will go with the cam gear.

So....where do I order a new one? Does summit sell these loose?

Why would the car have a brass gear? I hope my motor is not some cludge of go fast parts....it doesn't have solids or anything like that.

I typed brass, meant bronze. Bras would last no time at all ;-).

Hard to tell why yours has a bronze gear. Do you have any idea what CAM is installed? CAM hardness will dictate what gear needs to be used, brass, composite, iron or steel. If it is flat tappet cam likely an iron gear would be best.

Good info:

The only thing I 'KNOW' about the cam....is that it looks like steel from the photo ;)

The things I think I know about the cam come from the previous owner that is is a hydro flat tappet.

I didn't even touch that car!

All the mustang keys sit together in the same drawer....its like a contagion and you are the source....don't even try to deny it.

What about one of those composite gears mentioned in one of the posted articles? At least twice the money as the bronze, but claimed to have virtually no wear compared to the bronze gears that are sacrificial.

I'm gonna have to add another vote for bad dist. gear. I had a bad experience using a bronze gear as well, only lasted me 4500 miles on a fresh rebuild. Car completely cut out one day driving home and long story short my gear looked exactly like the pictures you posted, teeth all chewed up, big chunks missing from several teeth, looked terrible. Basically my misinformed engine builder told me I MUST use a bronze gear with the roller cam i chose because if I used a stock steel gear the billet steel cam would chew through that and have harmful steel in the engine blah blah bronze is softer it wont hurt the engine etc etc.

Well turns out the comp cams "Xtreme energy" cam that i have is actually austempered ductile iron, not billet steel, so I could have used the steel gear afterall. Chucked the bronze gear and put the stock steel gear back on and its been smooth sailing for the last 10,000 miles. Hope that's all your issue is.

Sorry to hear the bad news, but the presentation made me FOTFLMFAO.

I viewed the video first, and I was about to state that the reason why the engine won't catch is that there seems to be a coil wire loosely hanging without a good connection...

Sounds like the composite would be the wise choice then.

Make sure you change the oil & flush out the pan & pickup!!

From the photo you posted, It needs a new dist gear.
Also check the mounting height for the gear as it shows some wear on the bottom of the gear where it sits on the landing.
Chuck that bronze and go steel.

That'll teach ya...

This is just fact that I do have karma, it's just took the scenic route in getting there to ya...

But I agree with the others, try another dizzy gear.

Sorry to hear this. I had this issue with hydraulic cam and cast gear. The problem I had was the location of the gear. It was about .03 too long and it tore up a gear in less than 5 miles. Put a new gear on and set it to the 4.031 to 4.038 per ford and so far so good. Rick
