Kindle: I pulled the trigger

Although I really really like having a book in my hands with turnable pages, I like the idea of a Kindle when I go on travel, which is quite a lot. It'll really save space in my luggage. Plus, a lot of the older books are much less than what you can find in the stores.

OK...so I go online, and purchase one for $189 with 3G/Wi-Fi, as the ones with Wi-Fi require you to be in a hot spot, and my house ain't one! Then, I discover they are all sold out, with expected shipping by Sept. 4. At least I get free shipping.

Damn...

Anyone have one of these?

Just wondering....A new one or refurbished? Is it the regular or the DX model? Where did you get it from? As you know, my wife would like one..... She saw some refurbished ones on Amazon for 169. Not sure about refurbished though.

It amazes me every time a geezer tries to work with modern electronics. [nb]like reading words instead of hieroglyphics[/nb]

It's the new version, slate gray, 6" screen. Slate was never available for the 2nd generation, so this is a new one.

I think the DX is the larger screen for $369. My feeling is that I would want a smaller screen, much like a paperback, rather than something closer to 8.5x11 paper, which is more difficult to read.

I did find out that not all books are available electronically...only those that have been published or re-printed in the last couple of years. It seems too difficult (or expensive) to scan existing books and convert to text. With new publications or printing, the text is available electronically during the printing process. So, for example, little of Robert Heimlein is available for Kindle, as most of his books haven't been reprinted in the past couple of years.

Don't they sell the Kindle at Barnes & Noble stores? I'm pretty sure I saw them for sale in the front of the store last time I went. Or atleast a similiar product that you can read books on.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. :vic

If you really think about it, men always pay for "it". Maybe not with cash, but dinner, movies, drinks, etc.

I bought the Nook for my wife. It supposedly has more titles available and has 80211 wireless and 3g.

I got one for my birthday in May. Mine is the generation 2 (white) with the 6" screen. You get between 2/3 and 3/4 of a single paperback book's page worth of text per screen, so you "turn the page" quite a bit more often than with a regular book. That irritates me a little bit. I would like the larger version, but I'll save that for when this one croaks. I expected the screen to be backlit, like my laptop, but it's not like that, so I still use a booklight to read in bed. But it is GREAT for travel. I load up a bunch of the pulp crap that I like to read, charge up the battery (tip: turn off the wireless connection unless you're ordering something and it will preserve your battery life), and I have "books" for anywhere between 1-2 weeks before needing to recharge, depending upon how much I read. I used to take 2 or 3 paperbacks with me all the time, so this is really cool. You'll like it!
