Late model transmission question

What the newest year that will work with my 66 302. I read that 84 is when the motors became efi but I can't find when the trans became computer operated. I've found a few trans but I don't know if they'll work.

Thanks

You preferably would like to get an 88 or 89-93 AOD from a V-8 car as they (the V-8 car transmision) has more clutch packs and is stronger, I think the T-bird supercoupes transmissions also had more clutches like the V-8 cars. Pre 89 or 88 had tailshaft oiling issues. AOD-E's are just that electronic controlled and require the factory wiring and computer or a stand alone controller such as offered by Baumann transmissions. http://www.becontrols.com/ Hope this helps and answers some of your questions.

Found a transmission guy in memphis that rebuilds and installs AODs for what I think is reasonable. He said trading in my old 3 speed for a rebuild AOD with new torque converter and install with a 12 month warranty about $1000.

He has a 65 mustang that he works on himself.

that's a pretty good deal!
If strength is a concern, you can swap the guts of a 4R70W into an AOD so it won't need the computer. They are stronger. The biggest issue I have had with AOD's is the TV cable. If you don't get that set right you can burn up a trans pretty easily.

Re: Late model transmission question

+1 What Craig said, around here you'll pay around 800 just to get your AOD rebuilt and that's if you know someone.

Glad to hear that I might have found a deal. I'm gonna try to get a few pics of his 65. He took his auto out and put a 5 speed manual in.
