My buddy was eligible for veterans plates here in CA after serving in Iraq. He never got a ticket while he had them

Here in the Golden State, special recognition plates for military service have been available for quite a long time. IIRC, the Purple Heart recipient plates (and perhaps others) are fee exempt meaning that the vehicles wearing those plates get free registration.
