Let's talk air filters

Are K&Ns worth the extra dough? Why or why not?

Also, do the X-stream filter covers actually work?

Is any of this stuff worth spending money on or is it all a gimmick?

No, they dyno'd it without it, I think, but I do have one on order. I couldnt find the size I needed on line, I think everyone stopped selling the Ford racing filter I have......

I run a 14x2.5" round Napa Gold filter. Biggest I can fit under the hood. I think it works just fine. When I get a set of heads that breathe decently, maybe I'll worry about a better flowing filter.

Keep in mind, K&N filters don't actually filter as well as a good paper filter. They flow better, but a quality paper filter will filter out finer particles than most reusable filters.

Also, I've been hearing lately that Airaid filters are supposedly better than K&N's, especially for newer computer controlled vehicles. The oil on K&N filters can sometimes kill MAF sensors if you're not careful with application. Airaid filters are dry, so there's no oil to mess things up.

A few years ago while on a chassis dyno, I tried out 3 diff air cleaner assemblies, all 2 1/4" x 14".

1. No assembly
2. Std HiPo base and top with a Fram paper filter
3. K&N filter and Extreme top.

The best was # 3 followed by # 1 and # 2 came in last. The difference from Best to worst was a grand total of 1.3 RWHP.

The K&N is nice since you'll never need to buy another filter. I have recently changed back to a 3" paper filter after adding a drop base.

Who wants a 2 1/4" K&N filter and extreme lid....slightly used?

This was all done on a Mustang Dyno in Bend, Oregon, March of 2006.

We run the K&N filter with the filter top. Best thing I have ever used, they look cool too. They are for sure worth the money, buy one, take care of it, that's it. I run them on my fun street car too. The daily driver get's paper since it will only go to 5K :rofl

Being a Ford man, it's hard for me to put anything even close to a Chevy color on my engine.

I found that Amoil makes a nice filter including a filter top.
