Let's talk radiators and Electric fans

Hi all,

I have a 68 coupe with a 351C in it. I need to figure out a radiator to put in. I have been told going mechanical fan is the best overall with draw backs at idle. I live in Southern California and their is always traffic. So I need a radiator that can handle that along with any future crazy performance I might get to. I really have liked this set up on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/67-70-FORD-MUSTANG-COUGAR-ALUMINUM-RADIATOR-W-SPAL-FANS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5637a9e008QQitemZ370301067272QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

It's just a lot of money to put out on a fan/radiator set up. With that said it seems their are a lot of cheaper options but I am not sure which ones are good/not so good.

From my understanding I believe I want to stick with an aluminum radiator with at least 1 inch tubing. I need a top right and bottom left cooling connections. Have a Manuel so the transmission cooling lines don't appear to be necessary. I have always heard that the lincoln Mark VIII fan was one of the best for cooling fans. What are some of the good fans that can be had for a reasonable price? I would like to go with dual fans if I can. Even if one is small and the other large. Just feel that if one goes out I don't want to be completely SOL where ever I am at.

Would it just be ridiculous to do 4 12" fans? lol. I guess that would cover the hole radiator. Also, do I have to start worrying about the operating voltage of certain fans? I heard the Mark VIII works at 90 amps? is that a problem?

Thank you in advance for any info.

IIRC that is the setup that Dave S and a few others are running. While it's very nice and all, you can do it cheaper.

MustangSteve sells some nice aluminum radiators for less than $200, or there are a bunch of "universal" units from summit that would bolt in for the same price.

V6 Ford Contours and Dodge intrepids had nice high flow dual fans...I know the intrepid is a good candidate and since its a Dodgy, there's LOTS of those in the junk heap too. :rofl All Interpits should all have dual fans, judging from what a little quick research turned up.

Edit: Doing more googling, it looks like both of these fan setups are capable of cooling some high HP engines, so provided one of them will fit on the radiator, you should be good to go....they are pretty darn skinny, so should be no issues with it clearing the waterpump.

The contour fan is spec'ed at 24" wide, 27.5" to the end of the stock mounting brackets, 16" high, and 3.25" thick.

1996 Interpit fan spec's out at 29" wide overall and 25" not counting the mounts, and 16" high overall. Also looks to be thicker than the Contour fan? Might be a bad thing? Dunno how much room you'd have?

Seems to me like the contour fan might be a darn good fit. :ecit

**********************************************************************************

Also, I've looked at a bunch of LS1/LT1 Camaro fans at the local 'yard, and they work very well, but I can't remember if they are duals or a single fan.

Edit: Google tells me that all LS1 & LT1 Camaros have dual fans...I know they can keep some serious motors cool. No specs on the fan assembly out there, but it is pretty skinny...dunno if it's too wide or too tall to fit tho?

*********************************************************************************
I'd look at the Delta contols fan controller if you want to get fancy, and DO NOT zip tie the fan through the radiator, I'll track you down and hit you with a trout if you do. :scar

It's only a problem if you're using a stock amperage ALT. Even with fan relays you'll likely need to upgrade your ALT to a higher performing unit.

I have the contour dual fan on my '68 w/ AC. No issues at idle since I put it on, even with the AC. Before with the mechanical fan, it would creap up, especially in 90+ degree weather. Over 95, I just hoped I wasn't stopped long.

You will need a higher amp alt - the fans pull 40 amps when running, over 120 starting surge. I run a 3G alt with one relay for each fan.

Considering that setup comes with the radiator, 2 fans and the shroud, I don't think $619 is too bad. Hell, I paid over $500 for my Griffin radiator alone (if I were to do it over, I wouldn't buy another expensive Griffin).

Do keep in mind you'll need to purchase a fan controller and wiring harness, too. A good radiator, fan(s) and wiring harness doesn't come cheap, but it's worth the investment to protect your engine.

Problem is everyone has a bolt in radiator for a 65/66, but not many choices when it come to 67/68.

Not Really. Everyone makes a bolt-in for a for '65/'66 if you 're using a mechanical fan. Most radiators require modifications in a '65/'66 for clearance of an electric fan. The '67/later is easier, because of the longer engine bay (the added length is at the radiator support). There's plenty of bolt-in's for a '67/'68. We're using the big honkin' Northern radiator in my daughter's '67, even with a turn signal hood.

We have the bolt in 4 row brass radiator from Mustangs Plus I think in the 67. got an aluminum one for the 65.

I was actually looking at the radiator/fan setup that you supplied the link to, but I went with the Griffin radiator/dual electric fan setup from Old Air products instead. I found mine via Fast68back, Rick ;) on our site here. To be honest, I didn't even ask the price! lol I know I wanted a great radiator! I have found that skimping just doesn't work, finding something that has been tried that works For Sure is worth the extra bucks IMO. If you were to go with the Griffin rad like I have, you need the big block radiator supports cause my raditor doesn't mount to the radiator support except for the top bracket. I hope this helps!

You slackers have a lot of catching up to do! This girl has got some skills!

Ive always used AFCO alum radiators with good results, they are priced similar to the Northerns IIRC. Another fan alternative, if you have the clearance, is a Taurus electric fan...they are also cheap in the junqueyards and move some serious air.
