Lost my old mate today

8 years ago Cash came to live with us after being retired from a dog Breeder.
She was 5 years old, had been through 5 litters and had no social skills at all.
She had never met a child or seen a cat or had a toy.
We live beside a lake so all of a sudden she could see a whole new world from the back fence, plus we had an old cat who quickly taught Cash who owned the house, but at the same time would sleep and play with her.
Cash took to her new family and when the Granddaughters were born, she took ownership of them and never let them out of her sight.
Every day at 5am & 5pm sharp, she came to me with her lead and we took a 30 minute walk around the lake.
About 3 months ago we noticed she was slowing down, then she would get half way and turn back for home.
A trip to the vet confirmed she had cancer, but was in no pain.
This week we found that the thumb size lump in her "breasts" had grown to the size of a coke can and had started weeping.
The vet said the tumors were now in her lungs and it was time.
We had a great day yesterday, as i took her up the beach in the 4WD and she had a swim in the ocean and chased seagulls (she was always easily pleased!)
This morning we took our final drive to the vet and had her put down.
Rest in peace old mate

I am very sorry for your loss. We have 2 German Shepherds.

I always think about the following "story" when I remember our first German Shepherd, she has been gone for ten years, but I still miss her.

Dogs In Heaven?

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him. The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you."

"What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If he can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now."

"Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road."

So the old man and dog went on. They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "S'cuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?"

"Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable"

"You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere."

"Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?"

"No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in.
We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final."

The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven."

"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?"

"That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"

(Based on the "Twilight Zone" episode "The Hunt" written by Earl Hamner Jr.)

God's speed. You had a wonderful companiion and it is tough.

I have two German Shephards and I am not looking forward to the day I have to put them down.

Porsche is 12, Staark is 11. They are both showing signs of aging. Porsche slows on our walks and Staark is showing signs of tail dragging.

Here's a picture of Staark a couple of years ago in our tub.

Having just been through this heartbreaking experience
Toni and I know how difficult this time is for you.

Toni constantly says: Look up in the sky at night
and that bright twinkling star you see is your pup smiling back at you
letting you know all is just fine.

Sorry to hear of Cash's passing. Know that you did the right thing and he is now painless.

so sorry, February of this year we had to put down our 16 year old shepard mix..I feel your loss
