Manual steering gear box for a '66

stump

Anyone have a source for a new or rebuilt manual steering gear box for a '66 mustang? Also, does it matter if I use either the 16:1 or 19.9:1?

Thanks,
Gary

Do you mind if it's not a stock box? I really like my Flaming River 16:1 box (just needed to remove one of the cap bolts and pump it full of lube) it was nice before the lube but excellent after :steer. kip

I talked to Chockostang at the Ohio Ford swap meet and he has manual units for sale. They were 189.00 and core at the time. These are rebuilt units.

The 16:1 unit has tighter control for turning, but at parking lot speeds without power steering, it can be a bear with wide tires. The 19:1 unit will be easier to turn, but will take more rotation to achieve an actual turn.

I don't care as long as it works... I was, however, hoping not to spend $500.00. Best price I've seen so far from NPD. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with "Chockostang"; SF member?

Most of my driving has been back country roads. Sounds like 16:1 would be the way to go.

Thanks!

I've got one sitting in the garage. I think it may be an early 67 though. IIRC the early 67 steering boxes were left over from 66. Lots of weird stuff with the early 67s due to the strike.

I have one of those early models. It seems every time I turn around I have a left over 66 part on the car. Maybe the PO was just an idiot?

Any reason not to go with a rebuilt box? There seems to be plenty out there, and they have the same- 1 year - warranty.

Ordered a replacement 19:1 ratio, "AT" box from ChockoStang this morning...

Thanks all for the help!
