Max is slipping

I am afraid (still hoping it wasn't) that the surgery on Max might have been in vain, he started getting less interested in eating Thurs. morning, this morning he just looked at it and walked away, he threw up what he ate yesterday, he is still wagging his stubby tail and loves to be petted, (tears are starting) I am going to wait till monday to take him back,(the vet on saturday is not his and just started) I have not given up hope but it doesn't look good.

Rod, it's making me tear up just reading this. I hope it's not bad, remember were' here for ya buddy.

Rod, so sorry to hear the news. Having gone through this about 7 times, it never gets easier. Thoughts are with you.
Stan

Sorry to hear Rod, are you sure its not a byproduct of the surgery? If they removed part of the intestine/stomach it may be similar to a bypass surgery. He is used to eating and feels he needs to, but just doesnt have the appetite he used to have. Hope thats all it is.

Sorry Rod,
We went through this once, thought it was over.
My wife hand feed him mild stuff like chicken maybe some rice.
After about a week or two he started coming around.
Let's hope that's the case.

Mike

Thanks guys, I hope it is just sore from the surgery, I tried something different just a while ago, in hopes of getting some nourishment in him I bought a 6 pack of ensure and he drank/ate one, if he keeps it down I will try some more later tonight.

So sorry to hear bout Max, I hope everything turns out just fine, we have a 12 year old dog, she is the light of our lives, so far she is healthy, but at her age I keep my fingers crossed. Hang in there Rod maybe the vet will give you good news when you take Max back.

Is he currently on any medications--Rimadyl? Tramadol? Antibiotics--which one(s)?

Mix these ingredients (pre-cooked): 2 cups white rice, 1/2 cup cooked lean and well-drained hamburger, 1 pan-scrambled egg (a little milk mixed with the egg and fried in Pam, not butter), and 1/2 cup steamed green beans. Mix this with some low sodium chicken broth cut 50/50 with warm water to make kind of a bland gruel. [I have other recipes if this doesn't interest him.]

Feed him 1/2 cup of this mixture only--no more (use a measuring cup)--every 2 hours during the day (ie, 8am-10am-12pm-2pm-4pm-6pm-and a last meal at 8pm). Limit his water intake if he seems to want to drink excessively as "tanking up" on water might make him vomit, even if nothing is wrong. It's actually better not to eat or drink, than to eat/drink and then puke, as electrolytes and such are lost in vomit--not just water.

When are you going to get the histopath results back on the tumor type?

Thanks for the info and food recipe Deadstang, he is only on antibiotics and the vet (who assisted the vet who did the surgery)I talked to yesterday said to stop the antibiotics for a couple of days in case it was upsetting his stomach, I watered down the insure with warm water and mixed it with the prescription food they sent home (rice, lamb canned food) he ate that well and it has stayed down so far (I thought the insure straight might be too rich) and no results yet on biopsy, they said it would be messed up with the holidays falling when they did, I am going to cook some rice and hamburger for him tomorrow--thanks again. the antibiotic is trimeth-sulpha 480 mg.

Which antibiotics? Some are way more prone to cause puking than others.

I think it would be a good thing for him to have some anti-inflammatory medication and some pain management... A nice NSAID like Rimadyl or Previcox will make him feel better and help him heal quicker. Do not use Aspirin, Tyelenol, or Ibuprophen, however! Does your vet have an after-hours number you can call? If so, page them tomorrow and see if they'll get you set up with something appropriate. If not, ask them on Monday.

Oh NO! So sorry to hear there might be a set back.
Hopefully just temporary and he'll bounce back.
Keeping my fingers crossed and sending up a prayer for your beloved pooch.

Joyce

I started feeding the 1/2 cup of Deadstangs dog food recipe and he has not vomited all day! the vet that did the surgery is not in till Tuesday. I see improvement-- still hoping for the best!

Good news - I used to work for a vet, and often after digestive tract surgery it is up, down, then up again. Hopefully, he's on the up swing.
