Me or the Forum? Minor problem somewhere.

just some guy
I don't post much here nor do I visit as often as I might. But "show unread posts since last visit" usually shows no more than a page of threads so I keep up pretty well. I got distracted and didn't check in for a fair while. Hit the "show unread" and got four pages. OK fine. Read on through and realized I was looking at posts from 2011. ? Then I saw an old thread where the last reply was from me. THAT thread wasn't unread. Then saw the pages had increased to like 20.
OK I signed in and replied to a post. What did I do wrong after posting that skewed me not going back to the four unread pages? I think I hit reply and then hit the "back" button on my browser which works fine on other forum. Pretty sure I did it wrong but I can't suss out how so I don't repeat it. It was mildly annoying. Like Dodgestang. :roll

Once you have the page of unread posts up click the little red button that says new instead of the the name of the topic.

When you are ready to move on to the next topic go back and click unread topics again instead of using the back button. This will clear the thread you just read. In the instance where it brought up an old thread is it possible you clicked show new replies to your posts?

Using the back button could have called up a different session that is stored in your browser especially if the database had a momentary glitch.

If this does not help send me a PM with what browser you are using and I will try to duplicate it.

Not replies to "my" posts, it was multiple pages and I have only a handful of posts. Browsing, posted one reply, then backed up to continue reading fresh posts and was presented with just a whole bunch of "not new" posts. Will see if it happens again with this post.

Hmm. Going "back" after replying dumps me back at the normal forum page. I can click on "unread since last visit" and continue OK. Hmmm. Just a forum nuance I'll have to keep in mind I guess. Thanks.

I use tabs. The first window is the main forum page, then I open each forum with unread messages in the second tab. Each unread thread gets opened up in the third tab.

Use of back buttons on forums is never a good idea...

I rarely use those links at the top. I did notice that when I clicked "show new replies to your posts" it brought up several pages as compared to the one page brought up by unread posts. I think what it's doing is that it's showing all replies to your posts even if your post is in reply to another post. Obviously some redundancy between those two options.

If anyone reading this does not use those links or wants to minimize clutter you can make them go away by clicking the up arrow in the upper right hand corner.

I use "show unread posts" all the time, saves me searching through all the crap.

Crap? Other than pics and discussions about tractors, what crap is there? :thu

Pretty much anything that includes the phrase "started by silverblueBP'.

Sushi topics and other fru fru Kali food discussions, Lego VW builds (WTF that has to do with "Stangs" is beyond me) and one piece :shee water attire are a few that come to mind. At least MY tractor is a Ford product.

Eh, OK. Using the forward and back buttons is a long time habit from doing other stuff. Yes, I have noted difficulties using the back button on a variety of things. Trying to change my habits to using tabs more is a very good idea. At work I often have a dozen tabs open at once anyway.
