Medical rant......

Took my wife into a local surgery clinic for a routine scope of her right knee due to pain. Scheduled time in was 11:15am. Got in at 1:15pm. That sucked. All went well with that and they found no reason for the pain. Talk to Dr. time 3pm

The recovery was something else.....

Normal time is about 45 min. after surgery for her to come around. At 1 hour, I was asking questions....she is just a bit slow waking up. Just a bit more. time 3:50pm

Ask a second time, after glaring at the receptionist for 20 min. and letting them know the locked door will not slow me down. OK I am let in. time 4:17

Wife's oxygen level is 85% and up to 93% with a mask. Not good plus her breathing is labored. No idea why except a bad reaction being put out. time 4:27

Converse with nurse about their lack notifying me of the problem. He got the message of an impending complaint. Became very nice and apologetic. Wife makes trip to bathroom, off O2 for 7 min., level drops to 77%. Dr. decides to call for ambulance to transport her to the local ER. time 4:56pm

The hosp. is less than 1 mile away. They considered letting her ride in the car but with the sudden change of O2, they said no. I told them in the '66, I could be there before she needed the second breath but still no go. Amb. finally arrives. time 5:19pm

I go to the hosp, wait for amb....it arrives. time 5:45pm

From this on, we did all the checks in the ER. It does help having a daughter working in the hosp as things went good there. Linda's O2 did not come up enough to allow her to go home so off to a private room. I left the hosp. time 11:00pm.

At lunch and supper with my daughter at an all night diner. time Midnight

Went back to the hosp. this am and all looked good with a normal level of 94%+ so from 8am until 11am, we were dealing with a nurse that was having a nicotine fit and hoping she could get us checked out.

At least breakfast was good at the hosp.

Wife is doing good now. Just a couple days of rest and she will be back to beating on me.....hospitals and related businesses sure suck.

Sorry to hear that Pete. I sure hope all is well now.

I had sim. story with my heart several years ago. Resting heart rate was 193 b/s. Anyway, now I am into the alternative stuff, knowing at some time I will be old enough to need the traditional docs. Not looking forward to that.

Mel

PS. Heh, Obama says he is going to fix all that....Heh! MH

Thanks for the concerns. She seems to be doing fine. However, she needs to use this device to practice sucking to increase lung capacity.............. :ecit :vic Did I say that out loud.....

Well, heck, I will just put all my medical on hold until the all mighty can solve the world....lol

Glad she's ok Pete. I don't do well being put out either.

As Mel said,Luckly that's a thing of the past or is it in four years that will be a thing of the past , now that BO is on the job.

Sorry for your negative experience. I hope your wife recovers quickly. Too bad they didn't find a source of her pain. That is really frustrating too.

Are you going to send a copy of your "complaint" to the facilities involved?

Complaints to health care management are taken seriously, even one complaint. They realize for every one complaint there are probably dozens of similar experiences when people don't complain.
Health care is a service industry just like auto repair. COMPLAIN! Be a squeaky wheel.
While sometimes waits can't be controlled - you don't know what kind of crisis is happening behind all the other closed doors, them not informing you is inexcusable.

I'm very glad to hear they didn't allow you to transport her. I can't tell you the number of times I've admitted a patient sent to the hospital from a clinic that should have come by ambulance and had a decompensating situation en route. Please don't be angry over this part of the experience. they had her and your best interests - and theirs to avoid a law suit.

I can't tell you the long list of irritations I experienced last year prior to getting a total hip replacement. Some of it entirely embarrassed me that professionals in my line of work could be so callous and irresponsible. I wrote letters and received replies with their apologies and listing how they would assure that situation wouldn't happen in the future to not only me but all patients. Complaints are kept on file for a long time. Heads do roll!

On the other hand my hospital experience surround the surgery couldn't have been more smooth. I wrote letters to the hospital unit manager listing all the staff that showed very professional and compassionate care and how much I appreciated them. Please write notes to care takers who do an extraordinary job.

If you can take the time to complain on a forum, you can take the time to mail a letter, do it!
Put it in writing, not just a phone call.

Joyce

I plan on sending in a letter as soon as I get the names I need. Having my daughter in the med. profession as an office supervisor (at this same hosp) gives me some inside to the correct names and addresses.

No, I do not hold anything against them as far as the transport. I was joking with the person arranging the transport, especially with the way this town has them laid out. Surgery Clinic to hosp, 1 mile, Amb. to Surgery Clinic, 5 miles, and that is the normal arrangement.

Once I became aware of the situation, the treatment seemed to progress much faster. I feel they wasted a good 45 min. trying top fix what they told me they could not fix.

My complaint goes to the office staff of the surgery clinic and the dr. and nurse attending my wife once the O2 became a problem.

My daughter also registered a complaint about the RN that handled the discharge. Told discharge at 9:30, nurse has to get wifes medication. Then 10 and just a couple of min. At 10:45, we got the meds and was told in a min. At 11:00, she asked if she could take her break first so they see any reaction to meds. (Wife has been on these same meds for two years). Finally got out at 11:30 and she was upset because I was parked at a different door and I would not return the wheelchair where she wanted it. They had no transport people and wanted me to wheel her out. I was at the point of get the heck out of mu way......but she said she would take us out and just make it a smoke break....which is not allowed on hosp. property.

Such a good experience all around but the main thing is my wife is doing great.............

Hope your wife is feeling better Pete. I just had a similar experience with my father in the hospital. Seems like there are less and less competent people in the health care industry.

I don't think it is just the health care industry it is a symptom of our entirely lazy and apathetic society in general. Rampant everywhere!
People don't care about each other unless there is something in it for them.

As for the healthcare industry, I could go on and on...
They are hiring "graduates" from on line schools with relatively no clinical experience. Sorry, but book/internet learning aint the same as "touch" in the field. These new people who learn on line freeze when they have to really touch a human body or speak to someone about problems. Tip of the ice berg!

The RN at the surgery clinic had 16 years experience, 4 at that unit. The RN at the hospital had 30+ years experience with a lot at that unit.

Not young/new RNs, not new to the job, not poorly trained.....just poor work habits.

Not saying that was your particular experience.
Apathy happens to those that have been around too long too. Called burn-out!

Hope your next experience is improved.

Yep, every trip in we have is different. This is one of the few bad ones. My thing is to get someones attention and make a difference for the next person.

I have had numerous surgeries,(also knee scope/surgery) and I have only been really happy with the overall experiences a few times, I am glad your wife is going to be ok, I would keep a look out for low o2 signs for a while--good luck.

Wow Pete, somehow I missed this post. I hope swmbo is doing better today, sounds like it was a bad experience.

I agree with Joyce, send that letter in and rip some a$$!

Update....

The surgery clinic called and asked if how we felt about our visit. Boy, did I give them an ear full. After my complaint, they had the head of the nursing staff call me this morning. She was shocked at the info I gave her. Questions she asked about what staff did what and the answers she got showed her that the people they hired for patient liaison were not doing there job nor were they even at their desk.

I was able to tell her times and readings concerning my wife's condition and she was surprised I had all the info so ready. I feel that there will be a difference made after this conversation. She also noted that we were frequent flyers there and I would know how things were supposed to be as opposed to someone who was only there one time.

The wife is doing good despite their efforts to do her in...lol.
