Just got back a few days ago from a trip I planned almost two years ago. It was a 15-day cruise that started in Lima, Peru, went through the Panama Canal, and then spent several days in the Caribbean where I got to dive with my instructor at Roatan, Honduras and Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. We got in seven dives in all, and had a terrific time underwater.
At Roatan, we did three dives, one of which was at Mary's Place where you swim through crevasses and even enclosed ones, almost as if in a cave. For that reason, obviously, you have to be an advanced diver and you have to provide documentation before they take you in there. Here is a picture of one swimthrough and another of the huge coral that was down there.
At our next divespot, in Costa Maya, we had a terrific encounter with a sea turtle, and several large lobsters. Unfortunately, we did not have a speargun with us, so no tasty treats. We're definitely going back there for a week or two, this time with the guns and butter.
Our last two dives were in Cozumel, where we did two exciting drift dives. The visibility was awesome and I couldn't stop shooting pictures everywhere. Just as we were ending the last dive, the divemaster signaled me to come over to see a manta ray. The current was so fast that I couldn't stop and drifted low right over the manta ray. Despite the fear of having a Steve Irwin experience (and scaring the crap out of my instructor who was hovering about 30 feet above watching me), I got some photos as I went over. Then I kicked back and grabbed into the sand to stop and the divemaster asked for my camera and got pictures of me lying right next to the ray. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life to lie next to that animal, almost touching it, and just watching each other.
