More oil on plug threads

Changed all the ignition stuff not too long ago. Had some oil on the old plugs. Put it out here and Pete mentioned the valve cover gaskets. Didn't change those. Anyway, developed a miss today (I think I'm running a little rich since rebuilding the carb) and pulled the plugs tonight. My #8 plug is carboned up a bit but all the ds plugs have oil around the threads. I took a mirror and light and cannot see a single trace of oil anywhere on the head around the plug holes. Is there something else that could cause this or should I go ahead and pull the valve covers? Nice drive today. Car went up to 220* with the miss and tach quit working properly. :expl I'm better off just going hunting. geez

Carbon build-up happens when the ignition has misses, so fuel is not burned completely. A miss and a poorly working tach indicates the primary ignition system (low voltage side) ain't working too well. I'd start checking your distributor and primaryignition system. Put a timing light on the car and I'll bet you see erratic firings.

Oil around the threads as if they were removed thru a puddle of oil? Check the valve cover gaskets....hmmm, where did i hear that before.....
The 220 degrees could cause a bit of oil to travel that would not be visible...

I would fix the carb richness and then look into the wiring a bit.

I did give you props Pete. I'm gonna put some more plugs in and adjust the carb. Mid, I was going through all that in my mind today BUT, when I took off the e-fan AGAIN this afternoon and cranked it up, the tach was working and upon revving the engine it would "catch" at a little over 2K rpm and not come back down. It didn't act erratic, more like the needle was getting stuck. I'll be checking the timing tomorrow. I'm guessing we got it a little rich when I had the guy over to help me figure out my idiot fuel issue before. He adjusted the air/fuel with a vacuum pump and not the "turn out until stumble, turn back in a half turn" method. His way may have been better...that I don't know. If it is rich, couldn't that explain the carbon buildup and miss? I guess what I'm asking is: Can the carbon buildup be the cause of the miss or is it more likely that the miss is the cause of the buildup? One would lead me to fuel, the other ignition.

No fire at all at one plug would not cause carbon....might just leave a fuel wet plug. To get the carbon, I would say you need either a weak spark OR to much fuel. I would do the fuel thing first and see how that does.

I was just pullin your chain on the gasket thing......

Fine :dumas Next time you have a flat tire, I won't be there to show you how to change the air filter.
