Motor install help (again!)

Well-Known Member
I was feeling kind of good today, so I decided to intall my motor (Alone :yikes!!) Wasn't that bad! Read on please~

I'm having trouble getting my mounts to line up! When I had the motor overhauled, Herb installed motorsupports. When I try to line up the holes, they're off a great deal. I loosened the bolts on the block and tried that, and completly took them off on the drivers side, and it seems like the mounts or whatever is off by an inch. Seems also like the tilt of the metal pieces that mount on the frame, lay flatter than my new mounts. Any ideas?

Also< I found out that the Hedman shorty headers do not work with the Flaming river Rack, so Summit is sending me headers designed for the FR system. Full headers this time :pep! I always wanted a full set of headers!

wow there is a lot of room in there with a SB. Are all the frame mounted parts loose too? Is the engine centered? Looks like if you loosened everything up and had an extra body you might be able to get it. My only other guess would be maybe the upper mounts are for a 351W? Good Luck, your so close.

Well, I loosend the bolts that bolt the mounts directly to the block, but none others. When I tried just lowering the motor thinking that it would line right up, the mounts seem tilted, or not tilted enough. Are there different metal mounts for big block vs. small block, the part that mounts directly to the frame?

Yeah tarafied! I cannot imagine a BB in these Stangs!!!

yeah the big block has different mounts.

I would try to loosen the bolts at the frame and holding the two peice mount together so you can pursuade the mount to twist a bit more...

mine are custom made for the 429 swap, but you get the idea

Laurel mountain Mustang

I just spoke with Kevin At laurel Mountain Mustang(he's so cool!) He said it looks like I have the wrong motor supports. He said I need the little bit taller ones, which in essence (not the shampoo) narrows the gap of which I'm having a problem. here we go again~ hurry and wait :cry!

I do have another issue, but maybe not~ When I the full weight of my motor/tranny on the body, I was expecting the springs to be compressed more than they did. The bottom of the shocks still aren't going in the holes all the way. Kevin said I still haven't the weight of everything on the car yet. Then another thing, the rack being attached to the frame, is up higher, and the tie rods still don't go into their places yet due to the angle. The frame needs to come a little lower to install the tie rods. uh, I'm tired~

Isn't my motor PRETTY :hug2! I can't wait to get that crane out of the way and start putting Stuff on the motor!

I hope he's right and fixes it. The weight is true, you will have more but another point is the tires pull inward when the nose is up and even with weight on the car, they won't slide sideways well. If you roll it back and forth a little you may see the front settle down some more with the engine in...

Two things Dne', I have a set of 302 mounts in my garage if you want them. Second, did you torque your front suspension already? If so, loosen it up and let it settle, down torque or tighten until you have all the weight on there.

Oh yes, good point, I guess when I get it on the ground I can do that! Darn, I already have the new mounts coming! I'm so used to just picking up the phone and ordering something vs. someone might have a used something on here! Actually the only suspension bolts/nuts that are tight are the eccentric camber adjustment bolts. I still need to tighten every suspension part on the car! The ball joints are just ran up snug, the rear springs, etc. I can do that in a jiffy! Anyway, I just hope those motor support do the trick!

Just for future reference, you do know you can get them from a local auto parts store, they dont have to come from a Mustang parts house..

Thank you! I thought about that, but I did need some other odd and end things, and I like the people there at LMM. I have other things to do in the meantime, lots of things! the people at my local O'reilly's aren't very helpful and kind of frown at me when I come in there and need parts for my stang. There is a NAPA, but it's further than I like to drive.

Dne are the frame mounts original to the car?
If so, you have entered the 67 Motor Mount Forbidden Zone [scary music starts now]

Since I own one, I've been through it.
V8 67's (at least small blocks) have motor mounts that are unique to that year.
They look almost identical to 68's, but they are off by just the amount you're dealing with.
Obviously there's two parts to the system....the frame mount, and then there's the block mount.
Nobody sells a replacement for the block mount for a 67.
They say they do but they don't. What you get is for a 68.
Trying to mate the 68 block mount with 67 frame mounts causes the problem you've got.
The best option for you at this point is to get the 68 frame mount, because you have a 68 block mount.
I don't know what Laurel Mountain is sending you, but I bet it's the frame mount for a 68 since I don't think either part for a 67 is being made.
Another option, that I went with, was to get the TCP motor mount system, which is completely different than a stock type setup.

I have a set of 68 frame mounts, make you a smokin deal on them... They are already powder coated (black) too... I swapped to TCP/Ron Morris mounts

I'm so used to just picking up the phone and ordering something vs. someone might have a used something on here!

I'm considered old and used, and I also have a phone number! The best of both worlds! And I'm always available for you, my dear... :cool:mid :hug2

the '67 phenomenon

The frame mounts I bought off of Ebay, it's been so long ago since I bought them, so they are not unique to my '67( I just assumed they were all the same :headac). Kevin at LMM said he'd send me some motor mounts that are a tad taller, and supposedly since they angle, may make up for the difference. If they don't fit or remedy the problem, I'll send them back. I'm so confused despite the excellent explanations here! So, the frame mounts that I bought off of ebay were for a '68 more than likely? and the motormounts from a '67 do not fit the '68 frame mounts? So maybe I should buy Fast68back's frame mounts? It's not a question of money, I just want to finish my motor install. It's kind of making sense :pop. But don't I just need '68 motorsupports to fit this frame mount that I have now?

Hey Joe! I read through that site that you sent~ Sounds epidemic! Eventhough I compared Ricks(Fast68Back) nice set to mine, I guess I just couldn't see the difference, but I had no problem mounting the motor this time! The bolts slid right in. However, I'm happy and the frame mounts he sent really looked new! So, on with the next issue when it arises! :pop

Dne,
Here's the diagram that I was referring to on the phone.
David Suez is the guy that came up with it.
I think if you get Fast68Back's 68 frame mounts, you'll be all set.

Fast68back rocks!

Wow, Rick follows through with his word! :wor I got the box last night with the mounts and a surprise! :pep. I'm so appreciative, can't thank you enough Rick :hug2! I should get those in, and then finish some other things. I'll be back!

Thats great you got them faster than the Post office said! Sorry the motor mounts were the older ones, I had two sets and gave one set to a guy locally that is swapping an I6 with a 302. At least with those mounts and the frame brackets you should be able to see the '68 setup and compare them to what you have. I was worried as they kinda look just like the brackets in the pictures you posted, but the link Joe posted said it was a very small difference between 67 and 68. I sure hope they work for you. Plus it cleans up my garage and spare bedroom a little bit. Two more box loads to go......

I had been wondering how you were coming along Dne.

Motor looks great and glad to see you are making progress.

I have been stalled on getting mine done but hopefully will get back in action soon. Just had a few 'delays' on my end.
