Mr. Gem (Glen Morgan) and Colorado Fires

Anyone know if Mr Gem and Dawn are ok ???

They have a cabin somewhere...not sure of the location
and if the fires and evacuations have affected them

I have always made it point to talk to Glen during the Friday night dinner at the Outback. For some reason I am thinking that he lives NW of Denver, Golden area maybe? But the fires are south of Denver and North of Colorado Springs.

Fires in Colorado are in the Black Forest area, northeast of Colorado Springs.

their main home is in Golden, Colorado but they
have a cabin in a different location...not sure where

I'll email and see if I can find out anything
Stay tuned

The Reports of My Death are Greatly Exaggerated...

All's well here - with our developed and undeveloped properties.

As was pointed out, the gnarliest of the fires -- the one that burned down 500 homes -- was actually not in the mountains at all -- as it was in the rolling hills (mostly covered with Ponderosa Pines) to the north and east of CO Springs. That is a pretty upscale area, without any terrain challenges and plenty of access roads -- but Mother Nature does what she wants to -- as anyone who lives on Long Island or the NJ shore can attest to- We are just along for the ride.

As I said, the homes in Black Forest are large and expensive -- and their loss is gonna create huge payouts for insurors. I feel yet another insurance premium jump coming. I also suspect our legislature will finally find a way to fund a state firefighting air force, as there were delays in getting air assets... With only 9 heavy tankers, the west is woefully unprepared for another summer like 2002.

I'd have no problem paying a mountain home premium to fund state firefighting equipment, but that's just me. The problem is that the Feds own most of the land here, and their real estate is almost always where the fires start (but that wasn't the case with the Black Forest fire).

Meanwhile, we are getting ready for another anxious fire season, with all our files packed and an evacuation plan. My neighbor and I are working on plans to make sure none of pets of irreplaceable possessions are caught if another fire does occur here. Many people down in Black Forest had to leave so quickly they could not collect their pets -- and the National Guard and Sheriff's Office prevented them from going back in and retrieving them -- so lots of dogs and cats died as well as livestock.

But we are being proactive. I am getting my chainsaws tuned and ready and will be culling and limbing more trees before the really hot weather arrives in about a month.

To those that attended the Knott's show this year: Sorry I missed it. That was only the 2nd time I'd not made it in the last 12 years, but I was juggling multiple crises at the time and knew I needed to stick close to home. I will see you next April.

In Vegas, right? Most (if not all) of us are going to the 50th anniversary shindig in Vegas next year instead of Knotts.

I'm glad to hear that you're safe from the fires.

I am glad to hear from you! I worry about any wild fire!

We are in a fire zone and it is super dry! Real scary all over. I have a friend that is near Yosemite who has a fire burning near him. His brother has already lost his home.

So all of you guys in fire zones be safe!

Mel - I hear you....Living in the West has its challenges. But despite the fire danger and wacky politics of late, I still love it here. Chain saw is getting a workout (on my 2nd bar/chain in 2 years).

I have firewood -- and plenty of it. Bring a trailer and I'll help you load it.

By the way...Thanks to all who voiced concerns about our welfare. Our little community is the best!

I wish you were not an 8 hour drive, I would bring my trailer and truck and load them up. I am nearly out of firewood, going to have to gather some this year!

I am going to wait for it to cool down before I do though.
