My T5 swap progress - updated with pics

Well done Norcaler's!

Frank, I'll have to get your thoughts and impressions on the T5 install - I have a toploader and 3.55 gears and my teeth rattle a little looser every time I go to Willow Springs (and am RPM limited to 120 mph!)...

Frank,
Congrats. I was going to remind you to check the fluid level before you go. BTW, what oil did you put in the tranny? Is it a T5z?
Also get out your GPS and check the speed. I run around 2000+ rpm at 70mph.

Steve, Depending on how you drive the car, I wouldn't think twice but go either T5z (strongest of the T5 series) or TKO which is stronger yet. I'm also running a T5z with 3.50 gears. Love it.

Frank,

Did I read correctly that you put in a new pilot bushing? When I yanked the t5 out of the wife's old '89 GT, it used a roller bearing. And that's what I installed when I did the TKO swap.

Congrats Frank! Nice to have the group of goofballs there to drink all of your beer ;) Hopefully Craig left his mankini at home this time

Maybe I missed it, but did you post up what ATF you used. The reason Iam asking, is Iam having some problems with my T5, and I was thinking it might be the mobile 1 ATF I used. Thanks - Mark

I drive both cars like I stole them much to SWMBO's dismay. I have the T5z in the 67 and the TKO in the 65. I have discovered that if I don't start to take it easy on the 67, I am going to break something, like second! the 65 seems to love all the abuse and wants more.

the only real difference is exhaust and rear diff. 67 3:00 open and the 65 3:55 trac loc.

I used Valvoline Dexron III. In all my searching, the consensus seemed to be to not use synthetic fluid. A couple people even mentioned that Tremec says not to use synthetic.

Mel , a 3.00 open behind a T5z , isn't the load you put on the trans not too high at low rpms.??
Before I swapped my 3rd member from a 2.79 open to a 3.55 I noticed that the load the engine had to put on the trans to get the rear end turning , was extremely high.It all has to do with gear ratio's at surtain rpm's.IMHO.

Bruno you are likely right. A new third member in the 67 is on the top of the list of to do's...

Right after power steering, disk brakes and some paint fixing!

I too still have a long wish list !!!! Corbeau racing seats , willans 4 point safety harnass , shelby style rollbar , modern style suspension ect ect.....

Running a pegleg 3.00 behind my T56, so I feel your pain! Couple that with an aluminum flywheel and you have to be good with the clutch and gas pedal at a stop sign ;)

I have the same flywheel too....King cobra clutch all hydraulic too. SWMBO thinks fourth gear is for 30 mph or so. Lugs real bad. Get the RPMs up and dump the clutch and you have instant smoke from one rear tire....Hehehehe kinda fun, but somewhat embarrassing.
