My weekend ride Death Valley

Last weekend I went for a ride to Death Valley along with my wife and a friend. Been there many times before so we knew the place to stay (Stove Pipe Wells) that had a pool, restaurant and bar. :thu Never went in the restaurant. :roll :beer

On Saturday in 102 heat we rode to Dante's View (5,475') which looks down to Bad Water (-282') which we also stopped by. Also went to Uhebe Crater. Didn't bother with Scotty's Castle since we've been through here many times before. Just wanted a nice ride for the weekend.

Had great fun with the bar tender on Saturday night. She was bragging that she turned down a job offer to be the madam in a Beatty Nv brothel. And the night got funnier as it went on....maybe drinking does that. :beer :beer

Since it is quite low the winter rains accumulate here and then it looks inviting but considering all the chemicals its 'Bad Water'.

It's amazing to me that the highest point in the 48 states (Mt. Whitney) and the lowest point (Badwater Basin) are only 85 miles apart!

They wanted to save $$ when building the highest point.......wasn't a government job.

Nice area for riding. Been thru there once myself......long time ago.

Just curious but how do you stay hydrated in that much heat? I rode a vstar 1100 for a long time and it was hard to stay hydrated in the summer time. I would drink gallons of water before and after and usually had a frozen water bottle in a cup holder I mounted on the handle bars. Looks like a great time ya'll had and returned safely! :beer

We always wore long sleeve shirts and a medium jacket. We would soak the shirt with water and ride with the jacket zipped about half way. Worked like a swamp cooler.....and was real comfortable riding. Of course, some looked at us odd when we would soak the shirts.....or maybe they were looking at the wife...lol.

Drank tons of water too and never had any issues in 35 years of riding.

Desert riding out here is a little different. Sure the wind is like a blast furnace but the humidity is almost zero so you really don't have sweat saturated clothes. I wear full gear as we all did. My riding suit has vents but is full coverage and I felt fine. When we got off for a break I wasn't hot nor sweaty. Always have a drink of water ready though, as you say to keep hydrated because you don't realize that you are constantly loosing body moisture. I love desert riding. :thu

What feels strange is that when coming out of the pool we would get a chill, and the outside temp was 100F.

Its a deal.

You would have had some good talk with our friend Mark who was with us. He's a AF brat. His dad like you retired after being in fighters in Korea and Vietnam. I think he was a colonel.
