Need a distributor for a carbureted EFI engine

I need some help finding a distributor to use in my 66 carbureted 5.0 roller engine. The front dress is all 69 including the distributor and the bottom end is factory stock with a front sump oil pan. The short block is probably 2000 Explorer and has not been apart. THE PROBLEM: The 69 dist. shaft only engages the oil pump drive shaft by 1/4 inch after subtracting for the chamfers. I have driven more than a 1000 miles this way but I don't go outside of the $100 towing range. I know about the pre EFI 1985 Mustang roller engine with a Duraspark module and wiring harness (painless has neat harness) and that would fix my problem but I am looking for a cleaner, less expensive stand alone type of dist. like the Pertronix unit. I have E mailed Pertronix for the length of the shaft under the gear and am waiting for a reply but the photos in the catalogs don't look hopeful. The 69 dist. is 1.00 long under the gear and the EFI dist. is 1.50 long under the gear. Does anyone have any suggestions on other distributors?? No, I am not going to change the oil pump drive shaft.

I'm not 100%, but I am 99.5% thinking that you need the '85 Mustang GT 5.0 distributor. It'll have the vacuum advance cannister for your carb'ed engine and the proper gear for the roller block.

Dave's dead on - I got a rebulilt unit from Autozone for a '85 5.0 4BBL HP manual trans. Works great, the oil shaft that engages the oil pump drive was ~ 1/4 inch longer than my '68. Steel gear, etc for $49 bucks. Returned the '68 as the core, no issues. Hooked up to a HEI module, it was a cheap ignition for my driver.
 
Please refrain from using the words "Dave" and "dead" so close to each other in the same sentence. I'm living right on the very edge and it won't take much for me fall over the side.

A sorry update to the dist. problem and an oppotunity for one of you Ford experts to show your knowledge. I bought the module, ordered the 85 Mustang 5.0 manual tranny distributor, ordered the painless wiring harness and you guessed it, the dist. shows up first and the length under the steel gear is 1" just like the early point type. So does anyone know of a Ford or after market dist. with more than 1" length under the gear?? I can't be the first to want to do this. Monday I will call Ford Racing and see if they have an answer.

Interesting - I checked my dist, and the casting marks on it translate to 1969, although it's guts are for a duraspark unit. I suspect the rebuilders mix and match parts, and I happened to get a later shaft, while you got a early shaft? Curious to see what the Ford gurus say-

Also, I wonder if it's possible to get a longer oil pump shaft?
 
The reply to my email to Pertronix read something like " ---we have nothing for your application". I was hoping they would answer the question about the length under the gear. I talked to Ford Racing Parts and learned nothing. Went to my local salvage yard and looked down the dist. hole on a 67 289?? and a mark VII 5.0 HO and the oil pump drive shafts were the same distance below bearing surface that the bottom of the gear touches (about .60-.625). Kind of hard to get an accurate measurement down in that little hole. Maybe I worry too much but in a week I'm driving 120 miles (and that is outside the $100 tow range)to Old Town near Orlando for a all Mustang show. It will be the first show for this car if all goes will. If anyone has a Pertronix #1307 w/vac. adv. or 1308 wo/vac adv. available how about measuring the length of the shaft under the gear and share the info with us. Thanks, KG
 
We made it to the show and back with out any problems so the distributor stays as is until the EFI goes in. Thanks for trying, KG
