Need advice on laptop purchase

A bunch of you guys are tech types so looking for your guidance. I want to get my son a laptop for school use but know it will also be used for gaming and whatever else kids his age do. I DO NOT want to spend a ton of money. In a perfect scenario I wouldn't spend more than around $500.

I'll take simple pointers for certain things to look for or avoid or even better, give me specific make/model to buy.

Thanks

I bought my wife an Acer aspire one netbook. Haven't had any problems with it, even though she complains about it. She doesn't want to admit she can't use windows 7.

Well this one runs Windows 8 which I guess is just about a foreign language from what I have heard. Others have said once you adapt it is quite good.

From what little I know about computer tech it seems this one has a good processor and video card that should keep up with what my kid would do with the machine. right?

Need advice on lap dance purchase? What kind of forum is this? Now if we were talking laptop computers, I personally don't like Acer for I bought one for the wife and it is slow and noisy, kinda like me.

I personally prefer Toshiba.

Four Toshiba in the house. Great machines. Have two broken HP's also. That's why there are four Toshiba's.

I went ahead with the Acer in my original post. Be here today (Gotta love Amazon).

I have a Dell as my work unit and I like it. Third one and never an issue. Thing is they are "work" machines. Not real good at heavy media and such and that is what I know the kid will use it for aside from school papers, etc. Before the Dells, my company spent years on a Toshiba program and I have to say compared to the Dells, they were not very good. Lots of issues. Maybe they are better these days but my past experience turned me away.

Thanks for all the input. I'll give some feedback on the new one after a while.

That's pretty much the same rig I have except mine has an AMD processor and Winblows7.

Had it a little over a year. No complaints.

Well, I got to power it up last night to at least get started on getting it set up. I watched a few YouTube vids on Windows 8 so I could have at least an idea of what was what. Gotta say, not a fan yet. Very obvious that it was designed for tablets and touch screens and then modified for use on something like a lap top. It will take some getting used to for sure. For people who do all the social media stuff I think it's a nice set-up. Thankfully, this is the kid's and he'll have to deal with it. He'll adapt a whole lot better than me!

I'm just about to load up a couple games for him. A couple pretty intense graphic games the previous computer couldn't handle. Should be a good indicator of the capabilities of the processor, graphic card, etc.
