Need Zinc?

What do you all know about this?

"In an effort to extend the life of catalytic
converters the EPA and the OEM engine
manufacturers have instructed the motor oil
companies to reduce the levels of ZDDP (zinc
dialkyldithiophosphate) in the oil. The ZDDP
when present in the exhaust gas can coat
the catalyst which results in higher emissions
and shortens the service life of the catalytic
converter. This reduced ZDDP approach
works well to protect the catalytic converters
but leaves many older and high performance
engines without the proper EP (extreme
pressure) wear protection they need to protect
the cams, lifters and rocker arms. Virtually all
non-roller cam design engines are at risk for
significant wear problems."

I'm using Valvoline ZR1:
"Valvoline Racing VR1: 75% higher zinc than SM engine oil with a balanced additive package designed to work in both racing and street-legal applications. This product will protect older style push-rod and flat tappet engines. Valvoline provides this product in both multi and mono viscosity grades: SAE 20W-50 (part vv211), straight SAE 50 (part vv235), SAE 10W-30 (part vv205), SAE 30(part vv223), SAE 40 (part vv229), and SAE 60 (part vv241) "

If you have a solid lifter engine, you don't want to be running the new, worthless oil. I used to run the ZR1 oil until I switched to Redline synthetic race oil.

where do you get the Lucas Zinc additive? I don't have a solid lifter cam but it is a non-roller flat tappet cam. Don't want to wide out any lobes!
 
My local O'Reill'y Auto Parts orders it for me.

I posted a link to it in the other ZDDP thread on here somewhere. I'm running hydraulic flat tappet also.
 
I use Brad Penn Racing oil. Both Zinc and Phos numbers are well up there in the 1400-1600ppm range. If you want to be overwhelmed with info on oils........

I can't seem to find the breakdown of percentages of the stuff in the Red Line race oil, so I'm going to send a fresh sample to Blackstone and then another one at the end of the season to see the difference.
 
Redline 10w40. Good numbers, but I would still have some tested to see if the numbers are consistant with these.


Iron: 2

Tin: 3

Lead: 1

Chrom: 1

Alum: 2

Calcium: 2228

Mag: 56

Zinc: 1446

Phos: 1337

Moly: 677

Barium: 5

Sil: 19

Boron: 17
 
I sent an email to Blackstone Labs asking if they have done a sample on the Red Line 30 wt race oil. I received back last night that they've just finished one a week ago. I'm trying to get a copy of it as I type, but Ryan at Blackstone did tell me that it has a zinc level of 2377 :yikes
 
Seems too high unless it is break in oil. But more importantly what was the level of Phosphate? It needs to be around 200ppm less than the zinc.
