new aluminum radiator arrived today

finally got around to ordering my new radiator last week & it arrived on today's UPS run. i bought the larger 25" radiator with the inlet/outlet on opposite sides, so will have to fab up a crossover pipe for the lower hose. i'm really impressed with the quality of the part considering it was only $199.

after looking over jonk67's thread on mounting the wider radiator with side mounts instead of the stock saddle type, i'm going to expand on his idea by fabbing up a pair of "C" channels that will mount to the core support like his, but wrap completely around the sides & over the rear core a couple inches to temporarily mount my stock 20" fan shroud. doing it this way i can later swap to a elec fan setup & mount it to the channel along with the relay & adjustable temp switch. an overflow tube can also be mounted on the opposite channel.

what is the best way to flush the block to clean it out before putting the new rad in? thinking about running the "dexcool" red coolant in this assembly.

That looks like a really solid piece Steve, great idea on wrapping around for shroud and future electric fan mount.

spent most of the day out running errands so got nothing of real importance done today, but did get out to pops house & cut/bent my mounts out of a piece of 16ga stainless steel. i figure i can polish that to match the radiator later.

with the stock 20" fan shroud

even got a "gimme" high flow 16" elec fan today if i can fix it. i can get another piece of the stainless & make a shroud for this if it can be repaired

although its too large, my (dirty) cooling components fan/shroud combo for the 36 p/u shows how a factory type elec fan would mount to my brackets

The "gimme" electric fan looks just like the curved blade SPAL fan that I have on Scary. Excellent fan for cars where you can shove enough radiator in there. It's much quieter than the straight blade fan, but doesn't pull quite as much air. It's been perfect in Scary with the cross-flow, side tanks of the Summit radiator that I have in there. I went with the '70/later water pump, dampner, and pullies on that engine, so as not to have to fab up a crossover radiator hose. Well worth the effort in the end, but was a royal PIA to find the correct parts to do it.

So is that a SPAL fan?

it's not a SPAL, its a "maradyne" here's a link:

i did get it fixed today & that sucker will move some air! when i tested it, it blew stuff all over the shop & i spent a good while chasing all the stuff down that was rearranged.

here's the story on the fan: pop has a guy that buys parts from him all the time, then messes something up, has pop order a replacement, then brings the old one back (or swaps the damaged items over to the new piece) & brings it back wanting some "credit". i would have told him to :fbomb long ago, but pop keeps dealing with him. well, he ordered a fan a while back, had pop order a replacement (not sure what he did) & brought this one back. everything looked new, but the blade wasnt attached to the motor. the shaft wasnt long enough to go through the blade far enough for the spring clip to go on fastening the two together, but was flush with the face of the blade. i took the motor out of the housing today & drilled/tapped the end of the shaft for a 8-32 screw. then found a 1" diameter flat washer with 1/8" center hole & drilled/tapped it to turn onto the screw. dropped the blade on & put some red loctite on the screw & tightened it down. it worked perfectly.

Congratulations on your radiator! looks great! You were asking about flushing your block? All I've done so far is install my Tefba coolant filter.
Flushing the block? My brother told me take loose the upper radiator hose from the radiator, put a pipe that fits into it, a pipe long enough to clear the radiator support, then plug the radiator hole(so it won't leak water on the motor), put a water hose into the radiator keeping it full, then run the engine allowing it to get hot and the thermostat open up a few times, then that flushes the motor bypassing the radiator, run it until the water is clear. I haven't done this yet, but need to flush it soon!
hope this helps!

Your brother has most of the concept, but forgot a one main point. As soon as the cold water from the hose hits the t-stat, it will shut pretty quickly, shutting off the flow to the engine, and making it all come blasting back out of your make shift hose. To back flush the engine, you need to remove the t-stat to do it correctly. I really don't know of any other way to back flush it.

If your Tefba filter isn't getting too much junk in it, I wouldn't worry to much about back flushing it.

had a few minutes today & got the brackets trimmed & ready to mount to the car. i but the brackets on the radiator, centered it in the car & marked the mounting holes & the opening of the core support onto the bracket where i wanted to trim it. i used "elevator bolts" spot welded to the brackets as they have really thin, flat heads that clear the cooling tubes with room to spare. i even half-assed started polishing the brackets so they will blend in with the radiator.

took some time today & mounted everything up & fitted the shroud. all i have left is making up the hoses. also made a pattern for that electric fan to swap out later with the stock fan & shroud.
