New engine in but

I've got the motor in and I put #1 as close to top as I could and distributor on #1 used this for firing order ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410304526.063774.jpg
Now I can't get it to start. Any ideas or things to try?

No pops at all? Got fuel? Compression? Verify all before saying yes as it can be simple. Sounds like no power. Use a timing light on each plug wire to check for spark. Can attach it to the coil wire also for a quick check for spark. Got power to the coil....in both start and run?

Are you sure you have #1 at the top of the compression stroke and not 180 degrees out?

I hear what sounds like back fire through the carb in the video. Is that what I am hearing? If so, you have spark and all but your timing is way off. When you say you have number one at TDC are you sure, as Ken suggests, it is on the right stroke? Sure sounds like you are 180 off.

First you need to make sure you have two things, spark, and fuel!

Then if what I suspect your problem is -

Take the spark plug out of #1 and stuff the end of a rag in it. spin the engine without the coil wire on it and when the rag is blown out not just pushed out you will be at TDC on the compression stroke. then set your distributor at the #1 cylinder. Check your spark plug wires and make sure they are in the correct order.

You need to get back to the basics at this point and don't assume anything is correct. Check for fuel. If you have that check for spark. If you have that check your timing and plug wire order. Make sure you are using the firing order for the correct engine. The late models are different.

Ok. Got the motor running like a sewing machine at idle. But I get above 1500 rpm heavy vibration starts. Local guys said it may be the harmonic balancer. Just checking with y'all, the gurus, for other ideas.

The motor had a different firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 which show to be a 5.0 HO. Didn't know and can't find if that's a internally balanced or needs a different weight.

Auto or manual? Is the flywheel/flex plate and the balancer from a 5.0 or a 289/302. They use different balance weights. Old use 28 oz, new use 50oz

The late model 5.0 is different than the early 302 and 289.

The flex plate is different and IIRC from some of Johnpros posts the balancer is different. I think there is also a rotation difference too.

I would do a search here and VMF for Johnpro and engine balance or timing or even flex plate differences.

I don't get much into the late model stuff but I remember reading about it. I think the roller engines are different.

No such thing as a 75 5.0. Balancer and flex plates from a 75 will only work on 302s. What year is the motor? Most likely you will need to source a new balancer and flex plate if the motor is a 5.0

It should be added to NOT RUN THAT ENGINE until you verify you have the correct parts installed. You can damage the bearings and more REAL fast.

The new motor is a 86 302 the old is a 75 302 from a mercury commit.

I'm not running it

Yes you have to change them both to 50 oz units

Good news.....parts are available and the harmonic balancer is easy to change.

Bad news....transmission has to be dropped to change the flexplate.

Got them ordered today. Waiting with fingers crossed.

It should also be noted the typical 5.0 used a 164 tooth flexplate and the 302 used a 157 tooth. You can get the 157 tooth for the 86 but you need to specifically order or ask for that one as the AOD that would been bolted to an 86 uses a 164 tooth. Starter won't fit on a C4 with a 164 tooth flexplate.

any results yet ??

Sorry for delay. We got busy at work spraying rice for harvest.

Did get a 157 tooth and balancer today, and happy day runs great. Gave it a little gas at about 10 mph and the tires broke loose. Thanks for the replies and advice. All that's left is charge a/c and put the hood on. Then wait for criusin' the coast. Also I got board and tried to make my hood cooler. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1411527690.359489.jpg
