New stuff for the front end and a couple questions

Just to put the pressure on myself to follow through and get back to work on the car I've spent some money on more goodies. After literally over a year of debate, I went ahead and bought a Borgeson power steering box and assorted stuff. For my purposes, I decided this was the way for me versus a R&P. I also plan to get a bumpsteer kit, tie rods and new idler.

Would it be worth the investment to go roller idler over stock given the power box? I don't mind spending the money if it is a noticeable improvement.

What about a LCA camber adjustment set-up for a 65? I know it is not necessary but I'm wondering if it wouldn't make things a whole lot easier for alignment adjustment.

..and I know the :rulz. I'll add some pics when all the stuff arrives. FYI-- CJ Pony is running a 15% off sale through the end of the month. Saved me over a $100 so far!

The roller idler will not deflect under hard braking and cornering so it will stay on the same plane as your pitman arm. I'm part way through installing (as well as a lot of other things) the camber adjuster kit on my 65, so I can't comment on the easier alignment setup first hand but it looks to be a no brainer compared to juggling shims! kip

The camber adjusting kit makes adjustments soooo much easier and you know they will not be moving.

You have a Mustang?
I have the worst kind of mustang. One I have never heard run, let alone driven. One I have never seen assembled. A project car from the day we met. It sits there in the darkened garage haunting me with visions of what could be...

Two years ago I brought it home in pieces. A U-haul truck full of parts with a shell on a trailer in tow. The very next day the work commenced. I worked feverishly night and day until it was in gleaming new paint. Parts were being bolted on. A car was coming back to life. Then it happened. The plan changed. It was decided this would be the one. The last...so it had to be done my way. My dream car. The one all the others had failed to be. Every detail of the plan was altered. The costs skyrocketing. The budget straining to keep pace.

Then life happened and the lights in the garage had to be switched off. The dream had to take a backseat. Now, after what has seemed an eternity, it looks like the dream can again be pursued. So to answer the question...yes, I have a mustang but one day it will be much more.

Hey...you asked.

TWO YEARS!

Childs play, wait till 5 or 6 go by with little to no see-able progress.

Let us know when you need another pep talk :thu

Oh I'm all "pepped" up right now, thanks. Just got an e-mail confirmation that all the latest goodies shipped today!

Gotta pick up a tank of gas tomorrow so I can spend a bit of time getting the welding technique back to sufficient level to start putting the back half together (since Jeremy is too selfish to stop by and help a guy out). Nothing more depressing than seeing all the "damage" I did to perfectly good sheet metal. Got to get the tubs in and the framework for the 4-link done. Figure I can bounce between that and the front suspension to keep the momentum up. Always helps to see nice new parts being bolted on!

Okay okay already Mark, I get it. Could you be any more subtle. Geez!

LMAO.

I need to get Fred down to So-Cal pronto.

Congratulations my man on re-igniting the old flame. Keep adding fuel to the fire, if you run out, there is plenty of 110 octane on here for a lifetime.

I never had a bump steer set-up like the Baer unit so I do not know what kind of difference it makes in normal driving. Can anyone tell me from firsthand experience if it's worth installing these? I have dropped my UCA's and added 1" drop springs which is one of the reasons I understand a bump steer kit is beneficial. Thanks.

Oh yeah...the first of my parts orders showed up a couple days ago. I'll see if I can't get a couple picks of the stuff later today.

I did the Arning drop, stock upper and lower arms, #620 1" drop springs, stock tie rods and drag link with no bump steer kit. I've never noticed any adverse effects to the steering/ride. It only wandered a little when I was running toe OUT, but it sure made it turn in really nice!

Thanks, Mark.

I'm still taking advantage of the sale at CJ's (thru end of June 15% off w/ free shipping!) and can get the Baer set-up for $165 delivered. When I figure the cost of new quality Moog outer tie rods and sleeves (which the Baer stuff replaces) I'm really only paying about another $50 to have a high quality bump steer set-up.

The only piece I do not have in mind to replace is the drag link. How do you tell if it needs replacing, anyway? The one pivot joint seems to be solid and moves nicely. At $50 maybe just go ahead and swap a new one in...

When I restored mine, I just decided I didn't want to be driving around on 40+ year old suspension parts seeing as I would be stress testing every part!

It sounds like I have the similar set-up as Mark. Although mine is non-power, 1" Arning/Shelby drop, 620 1" lowering coils, no bumpsteer kit, stock type UCA/LCA. Recently my alignment went out and the toe is definitely OUT! Like Mark said, it turns nice. I think it's the left side on my car because it wants to turn left. Anyway, I just ordered the camber kit for mine and the alignment is on the 5th when I return from Saudi. I might add the roller idler and for sure the adjustable strut rods some day. The roller perches did make a difference. It's kinds squirlly on certain roads with the the toe out so I'm not leaving like that! Prior to the alignment issue which occurred on the Power Tour I didn't really notice bump steer.
Sounds like like you have quite the project. I have been working on mine now for 21 years and it's still not done (but I do drive it).

My front end set-up includes the following;

Opentracker prepped UCAs, roller LCAs and roller perches
I have Shaun's adjustable strut rods and Bilstein shocks
480# (rate) 1" drop springs
1" sway bar
A set of big and gaudy Wilwood brakes :thu
*Just in* :yah Borgeson power steering box

so...the questions remaining are; Do I go with a roller idler? Baer bump steer kit? At this point, I'm leaning to go with the Baer set-up since for just another $50 (over the cost of outer rods and sleeves) I get the bump steer adjustment and also a nice, solid threaded connection/adjustment vs. the old style sleeves. I'm thinking with the power box I probably won't really see any real benefit to the roller idler. Right?

Thanks for any feedback.

I don't see a benefit to the roller idler with power steering, but then again, I'm not a pansie that needs power steering.

I'd go with the roller idler simply because it does not deflect, like a rubber bushed arm does.

Bumpsteer kit - it depends on how much bumpsteer you do have... Lift the front end via the crossmember. Do the tires toe-in noticeably? If so, I'd definitely add the kit. Anything more than 1/4" change in toe thruout the travel range is unacceptable in MY book. YMMV...

I added a roller idler last year when I redid my steering. I have stock uca and lca with roller perches and 620 drop springs.
I do have power steering too.

I really can't say I have noticed a difference with the roller idler, but I figured if I was going to replace it anyway I may as well upgrade it. :shrug
