Next Project

Corn Hauler
Time to start my next suspension project. I am replacing the standard leaf springs with 4.5 Mid-Eyes. They came in last week.

This is the rear that I have in the garage.

It is a 68 Housing and 67 pumpkin. Since there is not any hole to fill with this combination, I drilling a fill and drain hole and weld a nut on so they can be plugged.

The center chunk is an Equa Lock that is either 3.50 or 3.55 (how do I tell?) I hopping that these gears will give me more traction that the Open 2.79 gears I currently have.

I am going to put the drum brakes back on but later, I will put on some rear disks. I have a set from a Lincoln

I need to figure out what parts I still need and what master cylinder. I would like an aluminum on if possible.

I planning to have this done by Monday noon.

Got the pumpkin out of the housing. It slipped and landed on my hand and I had to get 3 stitches.

Since I am not suppose to lift anything heavy for the next day, I need to clean the housing tomorrow.

Sanding the hosing today. Hope to have the drain plug welded in by tonight and the first coat of paint.

What gear lube do I need when I install the Equa Lock?

Sanded the housing and drilled a hole for the drain plug. My son Steven welded m the nut for the drain plug. I then got the housing painted. I used gloss black just because I was tired of semi-gloss.

Looks good! Hope the hand heals up quick.
I am not familiar with Equa-lock, is that like the Ford limited slip? I think you can use regular gear oil but you need an additive for the clutches.

The diff you have looks like a pre-67 unit. In '67 they added more reinforcing ribs and an oil fill hole (removing it from the axle housing). The equa-loc is the "pre- traction lock" limited slip unit. They're not as strong as a traction lock, having less friction plates and steels in them. You can indeed use regular gear oil, just make sure to add friction additive.

My '66 fastback was ordered with a 3.00 gear and equa-loc. When I bought it someone had pulled it and put in a '67 diff with an open 3.00. I was fortunate enough to find a correct 65/66 diff assembly and a 3.00 with an equa-loc unit in it. I have the housing all restored and new plates and steels to overhaul the equa loc unit. The coupe has just taken all my time.

Hope you heal quickly!

The chunk didn't have a fill plug? I see the new fill plug you installed in the back of the housing. Where did you install the drain hole?

No, It did not. It is a 67 Pumpkin which had a fill hole in the housing.

It is on the bottom. You can see the nut to be welded on in the picture of the sanded housing. The housing is upside don in that picture.

Ah yes I do see the drain plug. My only concern with it's location is the stress your floor jack will place on the threads of that plug each time you raise up the back of the car. Maybe being all snugged up, it won't do anything.

My blood pressure was stable enough to let me remove the rear from the stang. I painted one side of the new mid eye leaf springs. I will paint the other side tomorrow and hopefully install them tomorrow.

Noone carries the 8" gasket for the pumpkin, do y'all use just the copper gasket sealer? What do you torque the nuts to the shackels and from mount to?

Got the housing, shocks and new leaf springs in yesterday. Hope to get the pumpkin in and drive shaft hooked up tonight.

I had to temporary put the axles in and put the wheels on to satisfy the HOA who complained about my In-Op Car in my own driveway.

you know, I understand them being worried about junk but if anybody has paid attention to you they will know that it will not be In-Op for long! and it's not a junk car by any means!!!

Pumpkin in and the axles are temporary in, need to reinstall the drum brake and bleed the system. Hope to be driving by Monday. The mid-eyes leafs dropped the rear to where I wanted it but now the front look like it about to go airborne. I guess now I need to cut off some of the coil to bring it down.
