I found an '80 Trans Am sitting in a guy's garage.

The body needs paint but is virtually rust free. There is one small spot on the passenger quarter that will need to be cut out and some surface rust here and there but it is really solid for a 30 some odd year old car.

The turbo motor in it is shot. I'd have to either rebuild it or store it (numbers matching) and find another motor (350 or 400) to replace it with.

Tranny is unknown but imagine it needs a rebuild also.

He wants to sell it with a parts car missing the front clip. I don't have room for the parts car so I would have to find someone to haul it off for scrap metal...he's already snagged most of the useful parts and they come with the car.

It would be a couple of year project. I'd have to start with stripping the car (i.e. pulling the drive train / interior), have the car painted then start putting it back together over time.

It has Fisher t-tops (I believe they're Fisher)

He's wanting $5k...seems a bit high?

You need to know in what price range the parts occure.
If the parts are cheap , the 5K digest a bit better.
Let see : corvette parts are a bit more expensive and quality is general poor by thses cars.
It all depends what its worth to you but if I were you , I would wait and look for a better deal.IMHO and without seeing pics !!!LOL

Parts are not as much as Vette parts...Vette parts are sky high.

I was looking on the local Craigs list and someone has a newly rebuilt Chevy 350 for ~ $1,500...says zero miles.

Car still seems overpriced to me. Totally restored I've seen the cars listed for $15-$20k...but I've also noticed the ones I've seen at that price are listed for a really long time. I know a local guy that has one with newly rebuilt 4.9 motor, etc that is trying to sell his but he's asking over $25k. The car is breath taking but I've noticed he's not getting any calls at that price which is not a surprise really.

I've spotted a running / driving car for sale locally for $10k. The paint is driver quality but that might be cheaper in the long run. :good

Like AzPete says if it ain't broke we will tell you how to fix it... Well if you do not know what to buy we will tell you what you want. :lol

Red on Red is a pretty rare combo for a Trans Am.

The 74 has a 20 footer paint job, but the hood fits better than most F bodies I've seen.

Forced to make a choice, I'd go for the 79. 74 is the least desirable of the early back window design with it's ugly bumpers carried over to 75.

The guy with the project Trans Am says he's willing to negotiate on the price.

From what I can tell, I could have the 'parts car' hauled off and make around $300 selling it as scrap metal. Might could make a little more if I went through it and pulled off any parts that appeared to be something you could sell.

There are several motors on the local Craigs list if someone's looking for a 350. Not much to be had as far as 400s go however. I was thinking keep the numbers matching 301 stored somewhere and run something else.

$5,500 still seems too high though for a car that needs motor, paint, tranny and interior.
