Not overheating, just a little concerning!

Hey all,

Thought I would run this issue by you all.

I have a 66 with an A code 289, aircon (not fitted), power steering and a new 3 core radiator with deep shroud (back edge level with the back edge of the fan blades). Also have a 160degree thermostat fitted)

Have had many issues with overheating but since installing the shroud and having the timing (mechanical advance mechanism) fixed the engine has not overheated once.

Only thing is now, the temp steadily rises with speed, say I am driving at 35mph, the temp needle (standard issue) sits at about 1/5, then as I increase speed, say 60mph the needle with head north to almost midway.

The question is, should the temp be operating in this manner?

Cheers

A 160 thermostat is too cold. Once it opens, the engine never gets cool enough for it to close.....allowing the coolant time to get cool in the radiator. You end up with a constant open loop.

Also, sounds like the fan sits to far into the shroud. Most want 1/2 to 1/3 of the fan into the shroud. To deep and the air cannot flow out properly and creates a back force of air towards the radiator.

I'm with Pete. Run a 180* or 190* tstat and don't cover so much of the fan with the shroud. If the shroud is a bear to move just change the tstat and see what happens.

Better yet, do one at a time and you'll be able to see what each does.
