Oil all over engine bay

So, I've been battling an excess oil problem with the 66. I had forgotten about the problem after installing the 302 hybrid street motor...some time ago. Due to long winters and broken ankle, it had been some time since I drove the "devil". I noticed upon return from driving, I'd have oil pooling in the MC bar and all over the underside of the hood. Initial thought was leaky VC gaskets. I had re-used the steel/cork gaskets from the 289. Replaced them this week with perma-dry blue and thought I was good. No, not so lucky. Checked my VC breathers that are tubed down to the headers and noticed the male part where the hose attaches was loose to where you could spin it. OK, thought that it was the problem. Taped it up just to see if if fixed the problem, knowing I'd buy 2 new vented breathers.

Nope...still blowing oil everywhere. Now I'm stumped, no visible signs of oil coming from the motor, just oil everywhere after a drive. Disconnect the crankcase evac tubes and start the car. WTF, there is exhaust coming OUT of the hose instead of pulling a vacuum! Now I'm thinking, it worked with the 289 and now it doesn't. Must be a bad one way valve. I go back and read the info that came with the evac kit and in the fine print I see: Cannot be used with cars that have mufflers. I'm thinking, wait a minute, I've always had those race bullits on the car and when I installed the kit I checked it with a vacuum gauge and it was pulling a slight vacuum, both sides.

And then the squirrels start running. I remember after installing the 302 and Deb being offered the job in Iowa, she said the car was too loud to drive around in town. I bought 2 baffles from Spiral Tech and installed them in the pipes! There's my cause of backpressure!

So, I ordered 2 breather caps that are vented to the air and when they show up tomorrow, will disconnect the evac tubes, block them off and take it for a drive. If that fixes the oil blowby, I'll remove the baffles and see if the vacuum comes back.

And, if that doesn't fix the leak, the car will be listed in the for sale section.

Mark,
When the squirrels started running, did you hide from them so they wouldn't get your little .....you know whats.

Butt seriously, are you saying that if you had someone looking at the motor and you revved it up that you wouldn't see any oil come out from somewhere?

I'm saying that when I removed the air filter assembly and manually revved the engine, I couldn't tell when it was coming from. Once I removed the vented breathers and the evac hose, I could tell the nub was loose and had oil around the edge. Between that loose connection and battle going on inside the engine...positive pressure wanting out and exhaust gas going in, I'm fairly sure I've found the problem. But like a lot of things, time and more testing will show the cause.

This ain't rocket surgery.

So, the breathers arrived today via Summit Racing. Cleaned all the oil up and installed. Started the car, let it warm up...no oil so far. The true test, took it for a short drive and upon return, it's as dry as when I left! Now I just need to cap off the evac pipe that's welded to the collectors.

Phewwwww, I don't have to sell it.

I remember that same mantra....last year this time, except it was Summer 2014.
Nope. Never gave a date before. Was able to get a lot done this year to the point I am quite confident now. As a matter of fact, there will likely be an engine sitting in it some time in September. An engine that doesn't spew oil even!

To wrap this up, capped off the evac pipes and cleaned all the last bits of oil spray up. Everything's good with no exhaust leaks or oil spraying everywhere.

That was a close one.
