Ok what's the trick to install headers

Some say (with engine in)... go up from underneath. Some have said might have to lift the engine up and slide them in.

I know the headers fit. They were in there when I got Gertrude.

I've dropped them in from above and pushed them in from below in your application. Really just depends on the headers and how they are bent. The secret to working them up from below is getting the car lifted high enough.

What headers are you using? You're not reinstalling the originals are you? I thought those were in pretty bad shape.

Starter and motor mounts may have to be moved/loosened. It is all a trick of getting just the right angle and not forcing them. It is a puzzle and they normally go in one way. Plugs should be out too.

No clue what brand of headers these are, but they are long tubes.

And yes I'm reusing my old ones. They were just surface rust on them (no holes) so I sanded them down (wow they got shiney after that lol), painted them black with VHT header paint.

I've had the best luck dropping in from the top with the export braces removed.

I've also gone to using a combination of header studs and bolts. The studs really help to align and hold the headers and gaskets in place.

I always put the car up on jack stands, remove the spark plugs and they slip in like buttah from below. Granted, I do have a small set of Tri-Y's.

Yep, from below. My hedman long tube headers slip right in from below easily, dont need to take anything out other than sparkplugs of course

The best way to install headers:
Remove fenders.
Use sawzall to remove rear and front fender apron, and shock tower, both sides.

Access to install the headers should be quite easy at this point.

Once installed, weld up fender aprons, shock tower, re-install fender.

Are you serious? Chop out front and rear aprons? Who the hell would do that for long tube headers?..............er not me! It's kind of like having to remodel your favorite home for the inlaws?..............er not me! It's like being asked to clean my favorite dirty socks?......er not me!

I think he was joking....... smack-tard! :char

Everyone knows that you cut the torque boxes and toe boards out and slide them in from the front seats. Sheesh!

Seriously, I layed mine in place while dropping the motor in.

You can install the headers before installing the engine. You just have to drop the entire assembly from the ceiling. It self fits.

There is always the option of a torch and welder to do the install with. Make sure you number the sections so assembly is easier.....then grind the welds done smooth and repaint.........or..........just do it.

Just went thru this with My Hooker SC's. Wouldnt go in from top or bottom. Raising engine up gave me just enough clearance to get headers in from bottom and get bolts in. However, once in and with motor mounts back in place the headers were touching the body in several spots. Like so many others before me, a grease pencil and hammer provided the solution.
