OK...WTF happened?

Tried logging into StangFix all day today without success. Server was down? Why? Did the bill not get paid?

Fire the webmasters! No...I take that back. Stuff the webmasters' mouths with boiled peanuts...worse than waterboarding, according to the CIA.
 
I have no idea, but that explains why i logged in today, first time in two days, and all the messages seemed old. Glad i did not miss much!
 
Everyone who has been paid for working on this site is getting their pay docked this month. By 95%!!!! Very sad.

Actually, what happened is that a bug in the portal software bit us. The latest picture in the gallery got unapproved. You see over there in the left where it says "Latest Gallery Image?"

Well there's a bit of code that goes out and tries to get that image. However, when the image is unapproved, the gallery refuses to return the latest image. After all, if an image is unapproved, that means "don't show it to other users." Apparently, for whatever reason, this completely confused the code, and everything locked up. And unfortunately it took us a while to piece it all together.

Apologies for the loss of service, though I'm sure everyones' bosses appreciated the productivity boost.

Well, you were wrong. We are somewhat human in our abilities.

What compounded the issue was the fact that the server support staff said they were experiencing high cpu load on the server and were investigating it. I made the mistake of assuming that there was a problem on their end from that conversation.

What they did not know or tell me was it was this infinite loop we had going on that was causing the cpu load. So when I was finally able to get on and look at the logs after everyone quit trying to access the site I found that the gallery was blocked due to loading the server. After a brief discussion with one of my staff, the pieces fell together and the problem was rectified within seconds.

So, fixing this fixed the server problem as well.

So :stfu and be glad I'm a genius.
