I have come to hate the wifes 04 PT cruiser....for starters it gets crap for gas mileage.

The wheel bearing crapped out a few months back with only about 40k miles. Had it fixed. Yesterday, wife is coming home and it starts making a grinding noise again. Pulled a couple of tires off and brakes look fine. So I took it to the shop that fixed the bearing a few months back. Lucky for me they are open till seven.

Turns out the bearing is screwed up again.

Anyone know if this is a common issue for these cars?

I keep telling her we could probably get a good deal on an 08 or 09 Mustang.

You've obviously never taken a ride with her...I've seen grandmas that drive faster.

The car is not one I've ever been in love with...she bought it. But the turbo 2.3L does have some nice punch to it.

If it's a pressed in bearing, I'd guess it was installed incorrectly.

We had a PT Cruzer as a rental for a month after Gabby rear-ended some poor soul and our SUV was in the shop.

At first I thought it would be cool. And then I drove it. What a POS.

Get rid of that thing as soon as it get's fixed.

Her's drives ok but not my favorite car to say the least. Lucky for me I rarely have to even ride in it much less drive it.

After the hurricane one of the tail lights was out. I think it had something to do with the pressure change after the storm because my Explorer had one out as well then driving around the next couple of days I noticed lots of people with a light out. But the Cruiser then would have a tail light out every time it would rain. Only the bulb wouldn't just burn out it would be like it exploded. I think I finally figured out how the water was getting in there and go that fixed.

Like I said...I pretty much hate that car. We bought it used and have had it a couple of years. I need to check the values but if we can ditch it without totally losing our ass I am going to look into doing something with it soon. If nothing else, she has a decent commute now and the gas mileage on that car sucks, I am pretty sure my Explorer gets better mileage and it only gets about 20 on the freeway maybe 22 with a tail wind down hill, LOL!

It's a pressed bearing Sluggo. They re-did the bearing and didn't charge me anything. But it was time for new tires so some how I ended up spending a few bucks on it today.

I'd call it about time at 40k mi. I had a few come into the shop around that time when I worked at Sears.

What kind of bearing did they install? Not all replacement bearings are equal. Timken, SKF, GMB, FAG (don't laugh), and Koyo bearings are all pretty solid, although the latter three are usually only available for imports. There are plenty of cheapo bearing manufacturers that make bearings with poor steel, poor design, poor heat treating, etc. They don't last anywhere near as long as they're supposed to. Unfortunately, people who are paying for the work to be done usually want to get out as cheap as possible, so a lot of these inferior parts get used.
