Our kitty passed away

Our 19 year old cat (Sugar) passed away yesterday.

Not sure what happened other than she just got old and wouldn't eat. Had to have her put down because I didn't want her crawling under the back deck and suffering for days before the inevitable.

Long story short, Sugar lived next door to our old house. The neighbor left in the middle of the night just ahead of the foreclosure and left her behind. The boys took her under their wings and we've had her about seven years. She was half wild at first but found she was a sweet little cat as the years passed by. At first the boys called her "Meow, Meow" (original huh?) but later we talked to a neighbor down the street who owned one of her litter mates and found out her name, how old she was, etc.

I am normally a dog person and don't so much like cats but she was a nice little kitty. She was primarily an outdoor cat and used to keep me company in the garage on evenings that I decided to work on the cars.

Sorry to hear. Sometimes it is hard to make the decision, but it sounds like it was the right one.
I'm not a cat person either, but they do become members of the family.
We had one of cats that did the same thing this past year. she was 13 years old. she stopped eating and lost all her weight so we had to put her down.

Same happend here.
After we got back from Toulouse in France , a cat sat at the porch of our home.
My wife gave her some milk and from that day on , she stayed at our place.Sleeping during daytime and at the evening she stood up and went away for the night.Went we left for work in the morning , she was back and went to sleep in her basket. The day she passed away was terrible for the kids .......and me.
Like you said , I am a dog person but it hit me.
Sorry for your lost.

When the boys started feeding Sugar and gave her a name I knew I was screwed and might as well stop fighting it and take her to the vet to make sure she was up on all her shots, etc.

The boys have never met an animal they don't love.

We still have another cat, a dog and a rabbit. The dog and cat are really getting up there in years but the rabbit is only about two years old.

They want me to get each of them a new dog...told them no way, we still already have too many vet / feed / pet boarding bills. Besides, I figure they can share a new dog when the time comes.

I'd like to eventually get them a Boxer (or maybe a Lab) puppy. But they'll have to wait till more of the herd dies off. We are going on a road trip for a baseball tournament in June and I am already not sure what we are going to do with the animals we have while we're gone.

again same here with the new cat.

The kids want a dog too but I put my foot down on this matter.

You need to spent time on a dog ........every day .And thats not the case here . So , no dog for the moment .

Maybe later when I am retired.

19 years old....she had a nice long life. Never easy sending them along, but no need to let them suffer. Sometimes I wish we had that option.

Very sorry to hear of this, especially since I am a cat person myself having 3 of them. Sugar looks part Siamese which is my favorite. 19 was a ripe old age to say the least meaning she was well loved and taken care of.

What Dale said.

Very sorry to hear of the loss.

Sorry for your loss. I too am not a real big cat lover, but I had a good one go about 10 years--I called and got a time to take him to the vet and I went out to get him and he had already died, best cat ever--saved me $50 bucks! --ours was 17--I never thought he would last that long with all the coyotes around here

Sorry for your loss. I too was never much of a cat person, we only had dogs when I was growing up. But I married an animal person, sometimes I think she cares more for her animals than she does for me and our daughter. :hs Needless to say we have cats. Just yesterday I picked up a mom and 3 babies from the pound. Not for keeps, we are fostering them. When the babies get to 2 pounds they go back to the shelter for adoption. Mom will go back when the babies are weened. So if you need a replacement please go to your local shelter. :thu

On a side note my daughter and her 3 lab partners just got a cat, to dissect. She is taking human anatomy this quarter.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My experiences have been that these are very tough days. Those of us with pets know the pain we have when we lose one.
