Padlock that uses your car key

Not a bad idea.

BOLT Locks
If you stow your vintage vehicle in a trailer during off hours while attending a national meet (or other regional events), then chances are you’ve had to carry around another set of keys to the padlocks that keep the rear door secure. And we’re willing to bet that you are constantly checking your pockets to make sure you still have that extra set of keys. Thanks to the STRATTEC Security Corporation, that second set is no longer required.

They’ve recently released the new BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) series of locks, which are specifically designed to be unlocked with your modern car or truck key: The locks incorporate a patented, automotive-style cylinder with a shutter and six-plate tumbler. They are not pre-programmed; all you have to do is insert your vehicle key, turn once, and it’s automatically programmed to that key. Multiple locks can be programmed to a single key as well. The BOLT locks feature the highest corrosion resistance rating and are nearly impossible to pick or bump.

Currently, they retail for $28 each in padlock form, but they are also available in 5/8- and ½-inch receiver locks, cable lock, spare tire lock and motorcycle lock, with others to soon follow. More information, including an order form, can be found on their website, www.STRATTEClock.com, or by calling 414-247-3333. For a closer look, the BOLT locks will also be unveiled during the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Marketing Association) convention from November 3-6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Do they make locks for liquor cabinets that we carry in our backseats? Then again who would ever drive around with a LOCKED liquor cabinet?

I need a "boot", I did the trailer queen thing for the Birmingham 45th show but no more! I need a way to keep my car from being hauled away from a hotel parking lot, besides sleeping in it I guess. Maybe with half a Stang hitched to it as a trailer it will be harder to steel!

I have noticed that a lot of big boat trailers have a removable section of the front 2 feet of the hitch. Wonder if that would work for you.

my neighbor has a fishing boat trailer like that, but I was referring to the 67. It is so easy to steel one. No steering wheel lock, no shifter lock, no lock on hood, etc. I was thinking of getting a boot like the parking ticket thing. Even one of those things you put on the steering wheel wouldn't slow down a good thief as the steering wheel is pretty easy to pull off. Nobody pays any attention to car alarms either and a lo jack would be "too late" IMO. Every time I travel in the car and leave it overnight in the hotel parking lot I don't sleep well. That was a big advantage to the car hauler when I went to the 45Th, I didn't worry too much about theft although I have heard the truck and trailers get stolen too!

I might have to look into one of those pad locks. I don't want to do hood pins and have been kicking around other ways to lock my hood.

where, how would you put a pad lock big enough to use an automotive key on you hood?

Locking devices can be built onto the hood latch support that would accept a padlock. I assumed that's what he was talking about.

Yeah...I haven't had a lot of time to kick it around but I've read about a few different ideas. For sure what to do something and if I can figure a way to use a pad lock then having just one key would be nice.

make sure you share what you come up with, I'm curious how that will work. Might be an option for me too!?!

I and a few others with '67/'68s have done this mod.
Not the total answer but any extra time it takes for a thief is not good for them.
Only problem some fear is opening it fast if there is a fire. Well okay but if your car is maintaine well that shouldn't be a concern.
Added benefit is more confidence that the hood will not pop up at speed.

thanks for posting that, I might be able to make that work on my glass hood but my Shelby grille sticks out further than a stock 67.

I will be giving that some thought. I have a hidden battery disconnect and the battery is in the trunk. I recall seeing a lockable shifter handle for automatics, but can't find it. Every little bit helps! Thanks

As was mentioned before, but not needed for a stock hood, I have seen a extension made to the key in rder to reach under there. Such a fix may work for you too.

I know its not infalible but it does offer a little piece of mind concerning people getting under your hood and for me the concern of that big barn door of a hood flipping up at speed.

Another thought for security albiet after the event would be a GPS tracking device hidden in the car.
