panel alignment

Where do you start on panel alignment? If your replacing the qtrs with the doors off (just skins) how do you set the gap? Then align the doors off the qtrs, then fenders off the doors and then hood of the fenders?
I was just wondering if while I'm waiting to get parts to finish my qtr replacement if I should go ahead and pull the old doors off and work on the new ones? Then rehang the new doors loosely to be able to align them off the new qtrs when they get in place.
Just wondering what the original piece that you should work off of is.

I would get the quarters hung (maybe tacked in a few places) then put your doors on that you plan on putting skins on. I would get the skins installed on so you can move them around a bit on the door frame. When you get the skins where you want them finish bending the flange over and recheck. Then put on the frt fenders and check fender to door gap then hood. Being that the quarters are the one piece that is not adjustable (once installed) you have to work off that.

I'm not a professional body guy, but from what I understand you need to first hang the doors and align the door to the rear quarter panel. Then, hand the front fenders and align them with the doors.

Just make sure you have all your panels on and lined up before you start cutting anything off. The biggest mistake people make is when they are ready to hang qtrs they don't install there qtr ext rear valance or the deck lid. I have more E-mails and phone calls from people because of this mistake. Rich.

YES , put on the rear extensions!!

Hang in the doors. You can align the lower front of the doors a bit with the rocker panel.See pic.
Then the hood followed with the front fenders and front light buckets.
When everything in the front is aligned ,you can put on the quarters w extensions and decklid.
my 0.02 opinion

Attached is a document about panel alignment. I can't remember where I stole it, and haven't read through it recently but iirc it seemed pretty comprehensive.
