PayPal rant

I recently sold an item to someone who proceeded to file a chargeback, and PayPal put a hold on the funds. I contacted the buyer who said the chargeback was filed in error because his account was hijacked. He received the item and was happy with it and was in the process of reversing the chargeback. I faxed the buyer's statement to PayPal, they eventually reversed the chargeback, but they reinstated it AND a $20 "fee" and called the issue closed. Apparently, since I didn't get delivery confirmation (low priced item), I automatically lose since I didn't follow the rules. I suggested they could contact the buyer to find out the truth, but apparently they only care about the almighty delivery confirmation from USPS and the word of the buyer means nothing. So now PayPal has my money +$20 and the chargeback was supposedly reversed by the CC issuer.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I dont know about the charge back, but if this ebay, you can check out through ebay and get free delivery confirmation on the package. In case you were not already aware of that. :hide

It's gotten to where I don't even like to sell on Ebay any more.

They keep putting a hold on proceeds for weeks....pisses me off, especially if someone is lazy in leaving feedback.

I do use their free delivery confirmation on more expensive items, but the cheapest shipping option with dc is $1.64 (first class package, I have to enclose a bit of bubble wrap to make it thick enough). The cheaper ones I just put in an envelope with a stamp. I'll eat the occasional "didn't receive item" claim and still come out ahead.

Well, the buyer is a stand-up guy and he paid for the item again and even reimbursed me for the $20 fee. :thu

So he takes the screwin'? That hardly seems fair either. A really considerate seller would've split it.... :hide

In some circumstances, I agree. I suspect this buyer didn't actually reverse the chargeback, for whatever reason. Perhaps there was a fee involved with doing so and he may have decided not to (for such a small amount). He was all too eager to refund the cost of the item even before the case was closed by PayPal. When I informed him of the fee they charged me and asked for his help by letting his CC issuer know that PayPal closed the case without refunding me (assuming he had reversed the chargeback), he reimbursed me for the fee and told me not to bother pursuing it any further with PayPal.
