Phenolic spacer

I got one with a lot of parts I bought some time ago and was wondering if there is any down side to running one on my EFI 331.

It'll be installed on a cobra intake... other notables, E303 cam, AFR165 heads, 70MM Throttle body, shorty headers.

Are you talking about a carburetor spacer? If so, isn't that kind of incompatible with EFI?

No, not carburated... the EFI Cobra intake I'm referring to is the one used on the '93 cobra's...

The manifold is split into two pieces, the lower attaches to the heads like a carb'd mainfold, and then there is an upper plenum. The spacer goes between the upper and lower section.

Without the spacer the upper plenum gets in the way of snugging up the rear most valve cover bolt. I've had some leaks and figured it would be easier to service the valve cover bolts with the added space. Supposedly the spacer should give a hint of more low end torque.

I just don't know if there are any negatives to running the 1" spacer, so I'm curious if any of the EFI guys have any experience with them...

hood clearance could be an issue. i can't image adding 1" to what are already long runners being a problem.

The early Bronco guys run the spacer with no ill effect, actually it is suppose to help. On my 65 with the Cobra intake, it only clears the hood by 1/4" so there is no way to fit the 1" spacer.

Good to hear... When I built the chassis I lowered the engine as much as possible... I've got at least 1/2" to spare between the manifold and the hood with the spacer mocked up. On the back of the manifold where the freeze plug is installed, it is a little close to the cowl flange, so I'll take a little off there for additional clearance. I think I'll give it a shot this weekend...
