I picked up a metal cutting lathe!

this is a Seneca Falls Star lathe and as far as I can tell, it's nearly 100 years old.

The guy I bought it from works with me and I believe gave me a fair deal.
Here's a link to his original post on the part.

and a couple of pictures I took myself.

Nice project. I wonder if the gearing designed for foot power would stand up to electric motor speed and torque? Hopefully, there is not too much runout in the headstock bearings. Metal lathes are amazing tools; The only tool ever made that can be used to duplicate itself.

The unit I have has an electric motor, altho I'd love to have the novelty of the foot (treadle) power.

If I wasn't an engineer, I'd be a historian...

An excellent find. I miss working in a machine shop. Might have to keep my eyes open for something around here.

Thanks for posting that link.
I just wasted 3 hours of taxpayer funded work time having a look at their site!!

I love old machines... when the Misses and I married, we were looking at reception halls. There was a place called The Where House. It was full of old machines (smaller ones) and local memorabilia nicely displayed. There was even an airplane cabin mounted to the wall so that you could climb in the cabin and look outside through the windows. It was awesome! And to top it off, when we toured the place beforehand, Ford Motors was having an awards banquet. :steer

You're not really planning to do much metal work on that are you?

Cool! I would love to get a lathe, but a metal brake is next on the list. Last night, my son Steven got his mill all set up in the garage and power to it.

Nice find, the MTL in Metal means "Made to Last". They don't make them like that anymore.

if you are looking for a good 4ft box & pan, keep an eye out on ENCO. if you check every now & then, they have them on sale & be sure to register on their site for email notices as they constantly send 15% off discounts & free shipping offers. i got my 4ft box & pan 16ga brake on sale + used the 15% off & free shipping. & it was at my door for under $450.
