Planning a trip to Chicago

guruatbol

Always on vacation!
My middle daughter lives in Chicago and we would like to visit her. she is visiting us right now and we are looking at the different options.

It seems to me that the loop is the place to stay for easy transportation and still being close to her. She lives on W. Summerdale.

I can't believe that between the flight and then a room we are well over $2k before we even get to the transportation cost, cabs and such. I do like to use public transportation and I am looking to find a hotel that has a shuttle from an airport that I can get to from Las Vegas.

I just have no clue about the area what so ever, so I hate to make a bad choice and spend tons of cash on crap!

I am not the person to ask about Chicago, I live 200 miles south west and I only go there when I must, I pay more to fly out of downstate airports when I travel. I am just not a fan of big cities.--Now if you want to come downstate I am 35-40 minutes from Peoria. I would gladly show you my little part of the earth--buy you supper, offer a guest room.

I would love to see your little piece of paradise!

The plan is to visit my middle daughter. I know when we visit there is plans afoot to visit Navoo. My oldest daughter served an 18 month mission for our church in the Peoria mission.

If you map quest Nauvoo to Maquon, Il it says 1 hr and 45 minutes---Let me know if you have the time to get together or if you want to stay a night or 2--I don't know how much time you have on this trip.

Mel,

You should be able to do pretty well on flight costs. I'm flying out to SLC next week (just booked today) for $280 round trip. Southwest usually has good deals into Midway from either SLC or Vegas. Depending on advance, should be deals available.

There are all kinds of shuttle options from either airport to downtown. Out of O'Hare you can also catch the train straight from the airport to downtown Chicago.

Staying downtown proper will cost you but there are plenty of hotel options. You might consider staying just a couple nights downtown and others a bit out in the burbs. You can rent a car fairly cheap and drive yourself around to save money on taxis, etc. and pricey downtown hotels. I know a place you can park just a couple blocks off the lake front in the center of the city for $11 a day, for example.

Chicago is a GREAT place to spend some time. We have some of the very best museums in the country. The Field (natural history) is a must see if you have never been. Also the art museum, Shed Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Science and Industry are all part of the museum campus.
Depending on when you are coming (weather) just enjoying the lakefront and the Mag Mile is a lot of fun.

Shows, shows and more shows. The city has a really good "broadway" experience available as well. Always big name plays happening along with lesser known/local as well. Can't miss The Second City for comedy. Endless choices for music genres and venues you can catch.

Did I mention the dining and food options?

My daughter is in the theater industry there. She is an assistant manager at a live theater. Unfortunately they are a small not for profit and she barely pays the rent. She is looking for a second day job.

We will likely be visiting in October for a week.

Late to the party, as usual, taxes in Chicago are what's going to get you. If you rent a car for a week figure around $300 and then add $200 in taxes. Your daughter lives in a nice, but congested part of town. Skokie is a nice suburb you can get a hotel for reasonable $$ and be only 10 minutes from her. There are a couple places on Sheridan road as well. Like Terry said, there's a ton to see and do, and great food. Ask your daughter if she wants to have some input into your itinerary and make some plans on your own. Let us know when it's closer and we'll be glad to help out.

Like I said I am not one to ask about Chicago, I am a true redneck but I have been to my share of big cities in half a dozen countries---I would have to agree on the Museum of science and industry, shed aquarium, maybe a Cub game? Beautiful park even if not a fan. Lake Michigan has some great fishing excursions also--Now iffin you all wanna see how the hillbillies live whiles youse are headin for nauvoo give me a holler and I will show you the smaller things in life!!!

Gee, Mel...if you just wait until the first week in November, you can cruise the cemeteries and watch all of the inhabitants vote 2, 3 times. It's always a special time of year then in Chicago, not one to miss!

I did a quick search of rental car prices and as long as you don't rent in the city of Chicago proper you can get a car for less than $175 a week, taxes and all. If keeping costs down is paramount, stay in the burbs, rent from Enterprise and have them bring the car to you at your hotel.

You'll still end up spending a good chunk of cash but not nearly what you originally posted. Now when you start dining out and visiting the sights...

The only thing good about Chicago is the pizza. Even that is expensive as the cooks are unionized which ultimately drives the price up.
