Plasma or LCD?

Depends... how well lit is the room you are putting it in. Talking to different folks, I think they said plasma is best for darker rooms, but LCDs were best for rooms with lots of light (windows). Or maybe it was vice versa? I seem to notice that with plasma's you can see a clear image no matter what angle you look at it from, yet some LCDs if you are looking at them from the side, you get a glare.

I say you should go with one of the new 3D tv's from Panasonic. :thu HUbby and I are in the whole plasma vs LCD debate too.. until yesterday. We were in Best Buy and saw a few of the 3D tv's... and holy cow they are awesome! The Panasonic one was the best choice because it comes with 2 sets of glasses unlike others where you have to buy the glasses separately.

Lately my 100 lb 36" JVC CRT looks like a giant obsolete square. Like Mr Teebone, I'm baffled as to which flat screen I should research. Price, reliability and longevity are my considerations.

I've noticed there are 3 general types:
LED - most expensive
LCD - medium price
Plasma - cheapest

I visited Best Buy the other day and looked at a demo 3D TV. They were running some lame nature demo, but it had a killer picture. They should demo an NFL game or a NHRA race. THAT would open up my wallet.

Best Buy I went to had Avatar 3D playing for the demo. It was awesome!

If you want plasma http://www.6ave.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=PANTCP42S2 and use coupon code AFL4COUPON for $527 + free shipping (very good TV)

If I were to buy right now I would get a LED LCD. Great picture and you could find some good prices.
Plasmas run hotter and are heavier and also are less energy efficient.
LCD is lighter, cooler.
LED is the most energy efficient. The thing about plasma is they have the darkest black and you have better viewing angles. The current crop of led/lcd really levels the playing field.

Plasma may give a more extreme picture but they use a lot of current and put out some heat. They also have a shorter life span than LED/LCD.

LCD/LED is really a LCD with a LED parimeter to enhance the colors of the LCD. Also a limited life span but albeit quite a long time.

Manufacturers bought many components cheap this past year to build a lot of TVs expecting the same sales which hasn't happened. So now TVs are on sale big time.

I just bought a Vizio, 26" (for the kitchen), LED/LCD, 1080p, 60hz fro $249 online Amazon/Target.
It lists for $400+ and Costco had it for $300

Bigger TVs can be really cheap (less expensive) too....but I don't need one right now.

What to look for???
LED/LCD
1080p
120hz

get that and the size you want and then look for the deal.

What swayed me is when one salesman pointed out that the plasma extended service contract was much higher cost than LCD... Not that I purchase them, but it was just interesting to note. Also, plasma's use electricity even when they're off don't they?

I bought a 52 " LG LED LCD early this year after much research and reviews. Could not be happier. Great picture and saves money on the power bill. Football, racing, nature shows, Blu Ray all awesome IMO. :yah

Plasma - on its way out - uses a LOT more power than LED, and more than LCD.

LCD - good value as prices are low and will continue to fall. Been arouind a bit so there's life time data on them.

LED - new kid on the blockm, uses a LOT less power (I think a 42" set uses 40 watts)

I've read that deals will continue to be popping up. I'm waiting as my sets are all functioning and can wait. If I was to purchase, I would check out what's available from Vizio, while it's assembled in Taiwan, the profit stays here in the US as it's a US based company.....

I have been watching the TV deals looking for a new flat screen to replace my Projection unit that takes up too much space.
My in laws just bought a Vizio and they love it. I helped them hook it up and I thought the picture was outstanding.

Tomorrow is cyber Monday, so maybe there will be some good deals online. :shrug

If you are 5000 feet or higher above sea level the plasma is all wrong. Wal-Mart had some people from Brianhead 7000 feet buy one and they plugged it in and it wouldn't work. they returned it and got a new one and the same thing. Finally the electronic department manager called the support line for the plasma tv and was told nothing over 5000 feet.

I am watching the Sony LED/LCD 42 - 46" TV right now. I was in a Frye's a week or so ago and looked at the fit and finish of all the different brands and the picture of them and noticed the Sony had the best fit and finish and the picture was also way better. So much so that like the old trinitron the store had to put the Sony in an isle all by itself so it was harder to compare.

IMO never compare side by side in the show room (glare, high settings, etc.). Do your homework and check owner reviews as well as the Pro's before buying.

Mostly what was compared was the fit and finish. If the case of the TV has crappy fit like Visio, maybe the quality inside is not as good as it could be. I stay in lots of Hotels that all have different brands and types of TVs.

I prefer the LCD TVs for picture. They all seem to be about the same, but only one or two have had the Sony. The reason is that the hotels have so many to buy, the extra few dollars for the Sony times the number of rooms they have add up real fast!

Kinda like buying a car.

Oh, customer reviews are a good way to find out how good a unit is, but Consumer Reports is worth it's weight in gold when buying something like this.

I bought a 32" Sony Bravia for $359 on Friday to replace our really old 26" CRT Zenith in our bedroom.

I can't believe how cheap TV's have become. We have a 42" Sony Vega CRT in our family room that we paid a fortune for 8 years ago. It took 2 guys to deliver it the damn thing is so heavy.

That old 26" was a back breaker to get to the car. The new ones are so light and apparently better on electricity.

Do you guys have a government "green" surcharge for electronics that is supposed to cover disposal? I paid $25 for this stupid surcharge. At least I can rest easy knowing some bureaucrat is making a big buck off us little guys.

the city I live in has a hazardous waste disposal program that includes electronics. No charge at all (we're already paying for it in our sewer/trash bills).

Surely, you must check into that option!

This is an Ontario government thing. All part of the "green" movement.

I am sure they will manage to bungle it up even more than it already is. It is what governments do. It is what they are good at.
