POS Beam Torque Wrench!!

MD69Boss

Suspected Troll
Sooo, installing my pristine B302 intake manifold this weekend, (media blasted and coated with five fine coats of Eastwood Diamond Clear, low gloss), I was torquing the bolts and twisted the heads off of two, yes two of them using my 0-100 ft/lbs beam torque wrench. WTF?!
Somewhere in the back of my head the voice that I was ignoring, (I was hurrying as I was going to finish the install before heading out for a weekend of surfing), was telling me, "this feels like more than 25 ft/ lbs, dummy!
Clearly it was, as proved out by checking the remaining bolts with my 30-150 ft/lbs clicker torque wrench...
Anyhow, so I have tossed my 25 year old torque wrench and am have purchased new gaskets and intake bolts, all of 'em, and am now facing the enjoyable task of extracting them with my newly purchased extractor kit...
Should make for a fun evening...sigh...

I'm not sure the Boss doesn't hate me...

If you just twistd the heads off the bolts I would think that you could just pull off the manifold and have plenty of bolt to get a vice grips on. I have never had any luck with small easy outs. Especially on over torqued bolts. They always break off which lead to bigger problems.

They shouldn't be stuck, they are not cross threaded or rusted. Should be able to turn them out by hand if you can get the intake off with them in place.

I didn't articulate very well, both bolts broke at the threads, at the head. If I were able to gain purchase with a set of vice grips, I'd have done that without crying about it here... :shrug

Why would you be using a beam torque wrench if you have a clicker?

Beam wrench 0-100 ft/lbs and clicker 30-250 ft/lbs, I was shooting for 25 ft/lbs...

Oops my bad. Didn't realize you were going for only 25#. I have a 10-75 clicker if you need to borrow one.

Thanks for the offer, but my brother was gracious enough to loan me his when I couldn't quite justify purchasing one from Harbor Freight. I buy a lot of throw away tools and such from them, but torque wrenches, like floor jacks, I will not get from there...

The torque specs for the intake are 23 - 25 ft/lbs as per the Osbourne Manual...

Get you an inch/lb TQ wrench!

As a product of the California public school system, sounds like a lot of math involved with that... :shrug

Happy ending, (shhh, Craig!), was able to successfully use the Harbor Freight $9.00 extractor kit successfully!!
