Power Steering Removal

I am at the point of ordering my front/rear suspension and steering rebuild. I have contemplated ditching the power steering all together. Before I order my parts, I have to know if I need a manual or a power steering rebuild kit. I have been told that with the rebuild that I am doing, it will be a much driving car with the power steering removed.

Questions:
Since I am short on time, I am going to have someone install for me.

1) Is it a big deal to remove the factory power steering? I will obviously save the important parts.
2) Besides a new pulley (s), is there anything else I need?

Last question...recommended or not recommended by all of you? The car will be driven sparingly, weekends, cruising after work, going to shows, etc....no track, no fast corners, no drag racing..

Thanks.

Converting to manual is extremely easy since you'll have everything disassembled anyhow. Buy a new drag link or put the conversion piece on the PS drag link. If you want to sell the PS system, I'd buy the new drag link so the entire PS system can be sold as a set. Actually, I want to put PS back on my coupe and I already have an extra drag link/control valve already, so if you want to keep yours and do the conversion piece, let me know as I'll buy your brackets/pulleys/pump/hoses/ram/etc.

What are you doing for the steering box? Rebuilt/Flaming River manual or keeping the PS steering box?

Do you have any other accessories?

I think for now, I will hang onto everything. I just ordered my entire kit from John and Shari at Opentracker...what a pleasure to deal with them.

I ordered the entire front rebuild with roller perches, 4.5 mid-eye rear leafs, the manual steering rebuild kit, 1" sway bar and all of the little tid bits.

Now, I just need someone to put it all on for me...

For a car driven occasionally, you'll never regret going manual steering. Both of my Mustangs have manual and I'm very happy. It's very easy to install everything, but if you want, send me your car and the parts and I'll be happy to do it for you.

I have to disagree with Craig. I have manual on my 67 and hate it. I have power on my 65 and I am sure the PO did something to it because it doesn't float on the freeway.

So I am very happy with my power and will add it to the 67 as soon as I can.

John and Shari at Opentracker backed up what others have said, "If you have the right parts and the car is set up correctly, you do not need power steering...unelss you have a small steering wheel or are a 17-year old girl trying to parallel park".

We'll see how it goes...I can always put it back.

I wish I knew a Mustang guru who could do the rebuild for me...someone who has done it before.

Are you in AZ? If you were here in VA I'd help with it.

I have to agree with Mel though, I thoroughly like having PS on my 68 now, and that is after driving it with manual steering for about 100,000 miles.

I am in the Chicago suburbs....that is closer for you! Stop by when you have a chance :)

I might look at VMF's Regional Board...John at OT said it does not take as long to put the parts on as it does to set the car up properly...he said he can work on a stance for 2 days! The stance is really important to me...sure hope it works out well.

Do your replacement parts include a MS idler arm? PS and MS idler arms differ and should not be mixed between the two systems.
