Project?

I've been toying around with eventually getting another project. I have a few minor things I'd like to do to the Mustang but it is done for the most part, well minus the oil leak anyway, LOL!

I am kicking around the idea of buying something maybe late August or early September. By then I usually have a pretty good idea of how much PTO I'll need for the boys getting sick (or whatever) for the year and I usually start using days just for the heck of it somewhere along in there since it is very hard to take vacation when it gets closer to the holidays. Except for last year when I missed two weeks due to me having the flu then the boys having the flu I usually have plenty of extra days to play with. Also, it starts getting much less hot outside by mid to late September.

No idea what I would want to get other than I know I don't want a truck. I know where there is a decent late 70's Firebird for sale right now for a good price but I am sure it will be long gone by the time I am ready. Don't really want to play with another Mustang. I already have a coupe so unless I found a really good deal on a convertible or something then I'll pass, don't want basically two of the same car.

I have been looking at some cars like this one....

I think something like that would be fun to turn into a hot rod but not a rat rod...I'd pay my buddy to do a decent paint job on it. If they are really nicely done you can bring in some pretty good coin for them so you could get your money back out of it. It would take me a really long time though.

My concern would be finding parts to fit something along those lines. I believe a lot of times people doing these kind of cars steal the front ends off Mustang II's , old Camaro or cars along those lines.

I figured the price was pretty darn good. I've seen one other similar listing that wanted $2k for two cars.

Most of them I've seen run around $1,200 or so for just one. I saw a '41 Plymouth on the local ads at that price. The difference is the Plymouth had the orignal motor. Says it did run but has been sitting up for a good while.

If I bought something along these lines it will take me a really long time to get it done. I'd have a lot of reading up to do if nothing else, but I guess that's part of the fun. I would know the basics to get started such as strip it down, get it blasted and have a good excuse to use my welder more than likely.

Ya, and even though you have the donor car with it, I can imagine parts are hard to come by.

Why not a Truck? Did you already do one?

I don't really care for them to be honest. Besides, I need some place (i.e. a back seat) for the twins to take a ride.

With all the restorers out there, I have yet to hear of one not being able to make parts work. If you are not staying to close to stock, then it should not be to hard to complete. If you want stock, then buy a car as complete as you can to refurbish those hard to find parts. I think the car looks like a good base to do a custom street rod from.

I have some time that I have to wait anyway so I've been doing some research.

I had spotted a '41 Plymouth on the local Craigs list and just out of curiosity I did a Google search. You can find reproduction metal such as floors, trunk pans, etc (at least for that particular car) and the prices seem somewhat comparable to what you would pay for a similar Mustang part.

First thing I am working on figuring out is what to do with the Mustang. The home owners association won't mess with me if I had an old rust bucket that doesn't run in the garage that I only pulled out to work on but they would shart themselves if I had it on the drive full time. Not sure I can talk the wife into giving up her side of the garage. Talking to my buddy about borrowing some space in his storage for the Mustang but we'll see what happens.

I could in theory park the Mustang outside on the drive, the HOA couldn't mess with me if it is licensed / runs and gets driven from time to time. But then it would be out in the weather all the time and I am not too crazy about that idea. Especially if one of those July / August heavy thunderstorms with hail comes along.

I don't think there is room to fit a car into the back yard but the sad thing is the idea crossed my mind, LOL! There is room back there once you get one back there but I don't think I'd have clearance to get it through the gate without tearing down a large piece of the fence.

Shhh! If they hear you say that out loud, they'll throw you out of Texas. :lol

I like trucks ok in general, drove a '81 F150 for a long time back when and loved that old truck.

My buddy is redoing several old trucks at his shop right now and they are cool to look at just don't care to own one.

My room mate in college owned a really nice old Chevy truck back then that they had turned into a hot rod basically. I guess he sold it somewhere along the line because I caught up to him recently after about 15 years and now he owns a '65 Mustang, what are the odds?

If it makes you feel any better my DD is a Ford Explorer that has an NRA sticker and a Texas flag color scheme sticker with "Secede" written on it stuck to the back glass. :lol

That's a really nice looking Dodge, I personally think that would be really fun to drive once it was all restored.

Sometime in the future I would really like to get something along the lines of a convertible Lincoln Continental but this was the closest that I could find.

I still go to lunch every now and then with a guy who is a partner at the accounting firm I used to work for before I moved to this job. That is the exact car he wants to find some day, the Lincoln with the suicide doors.

My main question on something like the Dodge is can you use the existing frame (assuming it's solid) and just change the motor mounts around to fit a different motor, change out the rear end, applicable tranny, etc. You'd probably have to get some sort of custom drive shaft or have a longer one cut down but I'd think it's possible to do.

I know you can buy custom made frames to fit this or that set up but it is mucho expensive.

That's the first car I ever drove. It was my Mom's car back in the early 70's and she'd let me drive.... when I was still only 14..... that car all over the place. I remember driving it from southern NH to Scranton PA.... it rode like a tank, but I don't remember ever getting so much as a door ding with it.
